Design 2 students at Samueli Academy just wrapped up an inspiring field trip to Mercado Gonzalez in Costa Mesa — a vibrant Mexican marketplace and food haven by Northgate Market As students work on developing their own restaurant concepts — from the name and menu to the decor and unique selling points — this trip gave them the perfect opportunity to see the restaurant business in action. They evaluated everything from the atmosphere and service to the pricing and design details. The colorful decor, delicious flavors, and lively vibe sparked tons of creative ideas. Our students left with full minds and full stomachs — and we can't wait to see how this experience shapes their own restaurant designs! Twice a year we stop normal class instruction to welcome more than 100 professionals as they descend on Samueli Academy. With sessions such as How to Build Wealth, Are you a Fox or a Lion, and Careers in Biology, it is a day for career exposure and personal development. Our friends at Samueli Foundation came to visit! It’s such a pleasure to show our partners what they are helping sustain: a transformational learning environment for community youth. As with most of our campus tours, the group explored the campus during instruction where they saw first-hand the fun of a Project-Based Learning curriculum. Just take a look at the photos from our Engineering Fabrication Lab. Bridge building, Arduino programming, and constructing moon rovers are some examples of the engineering feats being completed. Meet Josie, Kiara and Perlita. These three girls won the Anaheim Ducks T-Shirt Design Contest! Each year, students in the Design Pathway at Samueli Academy are visited by members of the Anaheim Ducks marketing team. The task: Design a unique t-shirt branded for the Anaheim Ducks. The students are led by design teachers Patricia Vining and Reid Petersen through a rigorous design process that simulates what it is like to work with a real-world client. The experiences gained are priceless! Thank you to the Anaheim Ducks and the ?????????????? ?????????? ???????????????????? for this academically enriching and creatively fulfilling project. A huge thank you to the Honorable Gaddi H Vasquez for spending an afternoon with students in the Administrative Leadership class! The class, made up of various grade levels, aims to cultivate skills around people management, goal setting, persuasion, presentation, accountability and overall professionalism. As students wrapped up the section on presentation and oratory speech, they were treated to a master class from Gaddi Vasquez. Known for his motivational and inspirational keynote addresses around the world, Gaddi took us through his personal journey that began right here in Orange County and took him across the world. With all of the elements of an attention-grabbing speech - informative, motivational, persuasive, and entertaining - we could not have asked for a better conclusion to the presentation module. Welcome National Academy of Engineering Executive Officer Dr. Alton Romig and NAE Member Dr. Mehdi Hatamian! Joined by fellow engineers Dave Janisch and Mark Castruita, the group toured the Fabrication Lab where 12th grade students shared what they are working on, including a moon rover prototype. The "Fab Lab" is one of several unique spaces at Samueli Academy where students can turn textbook lessons into hands-on, real life applications.
