Finland is set to open?Onkalo, the world’s first?deep geological repository?for spent nuclear fuel—designed to safely contain waste for?100,000 years. This groundbreaking project sets a global precedent for long-term nuclear waste storage, using copper canisters and bedrock burial to prevent leaks and contamination. Onkalo proves that permanent nuclear waste solutions are possible—a critical step for environmental safety and energy responsibility worldwide. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gb2Avz7n

The U.S. Supreme Court is considering a case that could impact how and where the nation stores its growing stockpile of nuclear waste. With?100,000+ tons?of spent fuel stranded at reactor sites—including?3.6 million pounds at San Onofre—this decision could be a turning point in the search for interim storage solutions. For decades, the lack of a permanent repository has left communities like ours stuck with radioactive waste stored just yards from the coastline, impacting millions of people. The legal battles over storage facilities in Texas and New Mexico highlight how urgently the U.S. needs a real, long-term plan. San Onofre and many other sites were never meant to be permanent storage locations. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gJuV35qC

Los Angeles County is suing Southern California Edison for allegedly causing the Eaton Fire, which horrifically took 17 lives and destroyed over 9,400 structures. This is a terrifying case where Edison’s actions have led to devastation, raising serious questions about accountability and justice. SLF cares because Edison’s influence has also impacted our fight for justice at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. When corporations are protected over people, real accountability becomes even harder to achieve. That’s why we continue to fight for transparency and change. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/g52yeiNG

For decades, the government and energy corporations have failed to uphold their legal obligation to establish a permanent repository for spent nuclear fuel. As a result, places like the?San Onofre have become indefinite storage sites—at a staggering cost of?$2 million per day?to taxpayers. Over the weekend, we observed?Marshall Islands Nuclear Remembrance Day?(March 1), a solemn occasion marking the devastating legacy of nuclear testing in the Pacific. From 1946 to 1958, the U.S. conducted 67 nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands, including?Castle Bravo, the largest U.S. test ever detonated. These explosions left lasting scars—displacement, environmental destruction, and ongoing health crises for the Marshallese people. SLF stands in solidarity with the Marshall Islands and reaffirms our commitment to nuclear justice. The lessons of history must fuel our efforts for accountability, environmental restoration, and a future free from nuclear waste. https://lnkd.in/gCGf7fgn

The Samuel Lawrence Foundation urges everyone to watch this incredibly informative discussion with Dr. Gordon Edwards on the risks of nuclear energy. In Episode 90 of?Eye on the Issues, Dr. Edwards breaks down the dangers of nuclear waste, the long-term risks of “temporary” storage, and the concerning realities of plutonium production. With projects like TerraPower’s Natrium reactor in Wyoming and the growing push for small modular reactors (SMRs), we?must?take a serious look at the risks before moving forward. Dr. Edwards is right—these concerns demand public awareness and action. Watch now! https://lnkd.in/gA26ViDu

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to rule on the future of nuclear waste storage in?NRC v. Texas—a decision that could impact spent fuel policy for decades. At?San Onofre,?3.6 million pounds of high-level nuclear waste?sit just yards from the Pacific, with no permanent disposal plan in sight. This case will determine whether private companies can store nuclear waste at interim sites, but?temporary solutions are not enough. The U.S. needs a?permanent, safe repository?to protect our communities and environment. The?Samuel Lawrence Foundation?continues to advocate for a real, long-term strategy—not dangerous stopgaps.
