Teaching children about money is important. Learning financial concepts and being comfortable talking about money can help the next generation. I feel like each generation has become a little more interested in learning more about money. What are things you can do? When a child asks you to buy something when out, it’s a great time to begin talking about how your family decides what to spend money on. You can talk about how money is exchanged for services. How you work to make money. Then you buy things that others have produced. Economics beginning. You can talk about how you save money for big purchases, vacations, emergencies, etc. All impact how you plan what will be spent when. Reading books and watching shows that have a money theme in them is great, especially when followed up with a discussion on what they just watched. This year I’ve watched several popular kids shows that talk about money. Watching the shows with your kids (and in my case grandkids) helps have these meaningful conversations. My 7 year granddaughter and I had a great conversation about taxes on video that was shared at the #AFCPE Symposium in 2021. She likes recording us talking about money. Her elementary classes earn money that they use to buy items from the treasure box in their class. We are off to a good start. Maybe she’ll be a young AFC ?
