Looking forward to THIS Wednesday, 3/20, to visit and learn about this amazing facility at LTU! Hope you can join us! Click on the link in the initial post to register and got all the details! See you there! Prestressing Concrete Highway Bridges Beams with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Strands for Enhanced Durability and Extended Lifespan: ? Challenged with the corrosion of steel reinforcement and its negative impact on the lifespan of bridges and other infrastructures, the research team at Lawrence Technological University has executed multiple comprehensive research investigations to evaluate the short and long-term performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strands and their innovative potential for deployment as the main reinforcement/prestressing material in precast prestressed highway bridge beams?in place of conventional steel reinforcement. These investigations included testing CFRP prestressed half-scale and full-scale bridge beams and decks and extended to address parameters such as flexural and shear capacities, creep-rupture, relaxation, various prestress losses, and strength under extreme events such as accidental fires and after extended exposure to environmental conditions such as freeze-and-thaw cycles. ? The results from the investigations were implemented in the development of extensive design guidelines for CFRP prestressed highway bridge beams. The design guidelines were deployed in the construction of highway bridges with CFRP components in Michigan as well as other states. To date, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has constructed over a dozen of bridges prestressed with CFRP strands such as east and west M-102 Bridges over Plum Creek in Southfield (2013/2014), M-86 Bridge over Prairie River in Centreville (2016), I-75 Bridge over Sexton/Kilfoil Drain in Allen Park (2017, world’s longest bridge span prestressed with CFRP), and Cadillac Bridge over I-94 in Detroit (2022). The successful deployment of CFRP in bridge construction opens the door for the construction of corrosion-free robust infrastructure with minimum maintenance needs and extended lifespan.

Please join us at our next monthly presentation/tour/luncheon on?Wednesday March 20th, 2024 (10:30 AM - 12:30 PM), for the presentation titled “Prestressing Concrete Highway Bridges Beams with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Strands for Enhanced Durability and Extended Lifespan” by Dr. Nabil Grace at Lawrence Technological University.?After the presentation, we will have a guided tour of the Center of Innovative Materials Research (CIMR).?CIMR was initially funded by a $11M agreement with the US Army and includes large-sale fire chamber that can simulate conditions like those that resulted in the 9/11 attack and a full-scale environmental change where military vehicles can be tested in simulated harsh weather conditions ranging from the?artic?to 180 degree dry heat.? https://lnkd.in/gHhZ3zsG
