MEXpreneurs Investor Spotlight with Martha Lopez from Zentynel Frontier Investments! Zentynel is a VC investing in Biotech startups across the Americas. It was born from the collaboration between Fundación Ciencia & Vida and Venturance Alternative Assets. The Zentynel Fund, with over US$250M in managed assets, is led by five partners based in the USA and Chile with extensive entrepreneurial and financial expertise in biotech: Pablo Valenzuela, Bernardita Mendez, Cristian Hernandez-Cuevas, Pablo Fernandez, and Roberto Loehnert. Its portfolio includes fast-growing biotech startups like microTERRA, Samay, and Autem Therapeutics. Pablo Valenzuela and Bernardita Mendez founded in 1982 Chiron Corporation, one of the industry’s early pioneers in genetic engineering. In 2005, Chiron Corporation was acquired by Novartis for US$8.9 billion. This led them to later create Fundación Ciencia & Vida. Martha is Operational Partner at Zentynel in Mexico. She has extensive investing experience in startups related with health, software, foodtech, insurtech, and medical devices. She is also a member of the VC Committee at the Mexican Association of PE & VC Funds (AMEXCAP). For 18 years, the US has been my home, offering me incredible opportunities, from Harvard to Berkeley. But my heart has always been with Colombia. That's why, defying the common advice to hire in the US, India or Eastern Europe, I decided to build Samay's software team in Colombia. My goal? To replicate the life-changing experiences I had and make top-tier deep tech training accessible to the wealth of talent in my country. The past year has been a turning point. Since winning MedTech Innovator, Samay has been making waves in Colombia, and we're transitioning from anonymity to a recognized startup in the challenging landscape of healthcare and hardware. I recently had the privilege of participating in the KPMG Colombia Tech report, where I spent 1.5 hours sharing my insights on the LatAm dynamic and how it drastically differs from what I see in the US, specifically in the Bay Area where I live. It's essential to have platforms like this that champion diversity. Happy International Women's Day! ?? ?????? For me, this day holds a special significance. My daughter, though only two and a half years old, has already had a profound impact on my life. Her arrival transformed me, not just as a person, but as a leader. She has opened my eyes to the power of empathy and the importance of recognizing that everyone faces unique challenges. ?? Watching her grow and learn has been awe-inspiring. She's fearless, determined, and already showing a strong interest in engineering. I've made a conscious effort to ensure she isn't limited by gender stereotypes, encouraging her to explore any and all interests - from gymnastics and swimming to horseback riding and Kumon classes! ?? She's taught me so much about courage and resilience. At her age, I wouldn't have dared to try half the things she does! It took me years to realize my own potential, but she seems to have been born knowing she can achieve anything she sets her mind to. ???????? To all the parents of daughters out there, I celebrate you (Ricardo Garcia). Having a daughter is truly the greatest gift. El ecosistema DeepTech en Colombia creció un 56% este a?o y ya supera los USD 800 millones en valoración. El pasado 19 de febrero fue lanzado el reporte #Sciencepreneurs #DeepTech Colombia 2024, liderado por MenteX OlarteMoure Claudia Aparicio Ya?ez Juan David Martínez Toro 马大卫 y más de 30 entidades, donde se presentaron los avances más relevantes del ecosistema en el país y su impacto en el panorama global. Son 49 startups que hacen parte de este reporte, que hoy generan más de 500 empleos y levantado cerca de USD 60 millones en inversión. Los sectores más relevantes son salud Salva Health energía Solenium Bia Energy alimentos y sostenibilidad NanoFreeze Inc. Y aunque se ve un potencial interesante, existen desafíos como: - Fortalecer un mercado de capital de riesgo aún inmaduro. - Robustecer las incubadoras y aceleradoras como modelos de acompa?amiento. - Construir un modelo que articule una conexión clara al mercado global. Las universidades son gran parte del motor del ecosistema DeepTech, las capacidades científicas y tecnológicas se concentran en estas instituciones, convirtiéndolas en espacios clave para conectar la ciencia con el mercado. Debemos fortalecer la conexión entre ciencia, emprendimiento y mercado, como un gran camino para que las soluciones de los problemas del futuro.
