What does it mean to support someone who's going through a crisis? In this week's episode of our podcast, Lucie and I had the extreme pleasure of hearing from a suicide attempt and sexual assault survivor, Paula Correia, a trainer at Samaritans, Inc.. We found it incredible to hear her willingness and courage in sharing her journey. She was such an inspiration and Paula was so open in talking about the impact of shame, the need for support systems, and how important it is to create open spaces in talking about mental health. In her episode, she also talks about: - You never know what anyone's going through. - Normalizing the conversation around suicide is crucial. - Support systems are essential for healing. - Cultural perspectives can impact how we grieve. - Aftercare is vital for those who have attempted suicide. - Therapy can be uncomfortable but is necessary for healing. - Personal stories can help others feel less alone. - Healing is a non-linear journey. - Forgiveness is often hardest with ourselves. - Listening matters. Feeling encouraged and uplifted after a candid discussion today in partnership with Jodi Cheyenne Calucag York during "Being in Community: Navigating Mental Health Conversations Together" a WAATCH (Women and Allies at American Tower Climb Higher) session. We explored how to build strong, supportive networks and navigate difficult conversations around mental health and addressed the importance of self-care, overcoming the fear of saying the wrong thing, and cultivating a community where everyone feels valued. A special thank you to Jodi for setting the stage of support and even engaging in a short role play with me on the fly! And to both Jodi and Traci Kim for all of your time, preparation and camaraderie. Thank you to the rest of the WAATCH Team Hannah Levy, Kristen DiRusso, Sudha Srinivasan, Christina Minor and fellow Samaritan Wendy Joseph Tomaiolo for your nods of support and for the time and effort you put into creating community and making sure people know and feel that they are not alone. And thank you to Kathy Bello for all that you do and creating the connection from the start! Samaritans, Inc.

The next in person SafePlace group for parents and guardians who have lost a child to suicide will meet on Saturday, April 19, at 11:00am-12:30pm ET. Register at samaritanshope.org/gss. This group is hosted in partnership with Ben Speaks and is made possible with support from The Parmenter Foundation. Samaritans SafePlace meetings are caring support groups for suicide loss survivors. Meetings are facilitated by trained volunteers who have also lost a loved one to suicide. SafePlace is not a professional therapy group, but rather a peer support group providing a forum for exploring feelings often not understood by others. It offers a chance to share helpful resources, and to give and get support through the long process of grieving. Meetings are free, ongoing, and drop-in.

"Jarren took steps that I wish my brother would have, and as I told Jarren the other day, maybe if Doug had seen someone like Jarren be this open and honest about his demons, Doug would be with us today- making us laugh till we couldn't breathe, attending all of his nieces' and nephews' sporting events, celebrating our birthdays together." This week, Boston Red Sox All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran shared his struggles with mental health and his suicide attempt in Netflix's The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox. His story touched thousands of baseball fans, but perhaps none more deeply than Pam (Ganley) Kenn, former Senior Vice President of Community, Alumni and Player Relations for the Red Sox. In honor of Jarren's bravery and in memory of her brother Doug Ganley, Pam is asking you to help her help others by supporting Samaritans, Inc., a suicide prevention nonprofit focused on saving lives and providing hope. https://lnkd.in/ePH3f5PK

We did it—thank you! 💚 Thanks to everybody who donated, Cole Cuzzi and I surpassed our fundraising goal of $20,000 for Samaritans, Inc.! Samaritans is a Massachusetts-based suicide prevention organization that provides free, 24/7 support to people in need. Every day, they help hundreds through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, Hey Sam (a peer-to-peer textline for young people), grief support groups, and suicide prevention education. Your donations directly support these life-saving programs—and I couldn’t be more grateful. Now, with just 10 days until the Boston Marathon, I'm lacing up with purpose. Honored to run in memory of Jack and for every person who needs to know they're not alone. Let’s keep the conversation around mental health going. 💚 💜 #BostonMarathon #Samaritans #MentalHealthAwareness #RunningForACause

In 2019, my world was shattered into a million pieces when my brother, Doug, took his own life. Since then, I have gone on a personal journey to both keep Doug's memory alive and to support those going through difficult times so that they may not realize the same fate. My brother surely thought there was nowhere else to turn, no one to talk to, no other choice. He felt alone. Just this week, Red Sox All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran shared his similar struggles in a very public fashion, letting hundreds of millions of people around the globe into his personal inner battles which ultimately brought him to a place of the lowest lows back in 2021-22. By sheer divine intervention, the gun didn't go off and Jarren, through outreach, inner work, and help, is still with us today sharing his story which will undoubtedly save lives. (more on his story on Netflix's The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox) These are just two examples of how mental health can so deeply impact the lives of not just those facing these challenges, but their loved ones too. Jarren took steps that I wish my brother would have, and as I told Jarren the other day, maybe if Doug had seen someone like Jarren be this open and honest about his demons, Doug would be with us today- making us laugh till we couldn't breathe, attending all of his nieces' and nephews' sporting events, celebrating our birthdays together. It sure would have saved my family, most especially my parents, a lot of pain, heartache, second-guessing and regret. What a gift that would have been. And so, I ask you to help me help others by supporting Samaritans, Inc, a suicide prevention nonprofit focused on saving lives and providing hope. Not only does it service a 24-hour helpline for all who need it, but they have the Hey Sam text line for youth which provided peer-to-peer support for teens who need someone to talk to. Just recently, Samaritans has launched L.O.S.S.- Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors and has Grief Support Services for those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Additionally, the education and training programs provided by Samaritans, Inc provides resources and information so that you too can see some of the signs of struggle and learn tools and skills that can help save someone's life. Please help me support Samaritans by making a donation through my page. The process is fast, easy and secure. Thanks so much for your support... and if you or a loved one are struggling, please reach out. You are loved.
