Next Tuesday is Walk with a Doc in Aiea! This walking group is a safe, fun, and FREE place to get some steps, learn about health, and meet new friends. On the first Tuesday of every month, join UH Family Medicine doctors for a walk in the park! Get your walking shoes and stop by Blaisdell Park, 98-1005 Kamehameha Highway, 7:30 am to 8:30 am. Walk with a Doc was originally started to get people moving, and over the years the benefits of the program far exceed a simple walk! Samaritan Counseling Center Hawai'i is celebrating 35 years of service to Hawai'i's diverse communities. Through "Samaritan Celebrates" we are sharing our history and honoring the people and organizations who help us create a healthier and more resilient Hawai'i. Today's #SamaritanCelebrates recognizes Thomas Miyashiro, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. In 2013, Tom began working at Samaritan Counseling Center Hawai’i as a post-graduate intern. He earned his license in MFT in December 2014 and joined the Center as a therapist in 2015. Prior to becoming a MFT, Tom was a High School teacher for 17 years, a Middle School counselor for 20 years, and a High School counselor for 1.5 years – all at Saint Louis School. He is also an ordained Permanent Deacon in the Catholic Diocese of Honolulu since 1981 and has been assigned to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Pearl City to the present. Tom’s passion for counseling is to reach out to individuals, couples, and families to prevent problems. As a school counselor, he referred some students for professional counseling. He became a Parent Project presenter in 2003 to help parents with their “strong-willed” kills. As a Permanent Deacon, he prepared couples for Matrimony and offered a couple’s communication class (Christian Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program, certified 1999) for engaged and married couples. Today's #SamaritanCelebrates honors Church of the Crossroads, a strong supporter of mental health and Samaritan Counseling Center Hawai’i. Church of the Crossroads has been a gracious host for Board retreats and helped the Center celebrate a Mahalo Luncheon in 2022. Rev. Dr. Phyllis Roe, who served as Executive Director of Samaritan Counseling Center Hawai’i from 1991 to 2001, found her spiritual home at Church of the Crossroads. "Her pastor and friend, Rev. Neal MacPherson, found in her a discreet and skilled counselor to whom he referred many of his parishioners. It was not uncommon for Crossroaders to meet each other when visiting the Center and SCCH became known as "Crossroads West" through Phyllis's capacity to maintain confidentiality while offering both professional help and sincere personal friendship. Phyllis's participation in the life of this church, sometimes as a guest preacher, often as participant in serving Holy Communion, and as always a full supporter of programs and activities is a cherished memory for all of its members.” Church of the Crossroads is a Just Peace and Open and Affirming Congregation.
