Elliott T. Bowers Honors College at Sam Houston State University

Each fall the Honors College attends the National Collegiate Honors Council conference. In October, we spent a few days in Kansas City learning about Heritage and the Honors experience. We listened to fantastic presenters, took pages of notes, networked with colleagues from across the nation, and ate a ton of barbeque. We loved learning about making our program accessible, inclusive, and engaging for students from all backgrounds. We're excited to hear more about "Charting Partnerships and Collaborations to Inspire Honors" at NCHC 2025. See you in November, San Diego!

Last semester our Decision Making Seminar (HONR 3365) was taught by Dr. Steven Koether and was a huge success! Dr. Koether says "I am certain [Honors students] will be tomorrow's leaders and knowledge creators. This group of students went above and beyond" and we have to agree. Our students really are the best. ?? This course introduces students to the fundamentals of decision-making and problem-solving. Students (1)learn fundamental principles, generalizations, or theories of decision-making, (2) learn how to apply course material to improve thinking, problem-solving, and decisions, (3) gain skills for working as a team, (4) understand how to analyze and critically evaluate ideas, arguments, and points of view concerned with decisions. Decision Making is an Academic Community Engaged (ACE’d) course, meaning student coursework and actions will support the larger Bearkat community through the moderation of deliberative dialogues. This was my first honors seminar at Sam and it will be tough to top! It was a pleasure getting to spend the semester with this group of fine folks and share some remarkable ideas ????

The Honors Medallion Ceremony was very nice today! I was very thankful to be able to help recognize six of our Honors graduates for their outstanding performance in programs across the SHSU College of Health Sciences. Keep an eye on Isoken Aigbe (Nursing), Hailey Davis (Nursing), Camryn Guillory (Health Care Administration), Abby Hooks (Nursing), Phillip Mach (Kinesiology-Clinical Exercise Science), and Daisy Thornton (Nursing)...big things are ahead for them all! While I wasn't able to get pictures of them since I was presenting their medals, I was able to get a picture of one of our other all-stars, Trista Alvarado! Trista is a Junior Human Performance and Wellness Management student who works in the Dean's Office and is working with Dr. Jennifer Didier on research.
