This is why I love what I do!!! Wings Over Wilderness (WOW) Program I recently had the privilege of photographing one of the Crab Bank Quests for the Wings Over Wilderness (WOW) Program, a fully funded field trip sponsored by Boeing, designed for Title 1 schools, grades K-12. This incredible initiative brings students outdoors, connecting them with our local environment while integrating STEAM standards through hands-on learning. During the Crab Bank Quest (K-3rd grade), students embarked on a naturalist-led boat ride down Shem Creek and Charleston Harbor with Coastal Expeditions. The adventure included fossil and shell hunting on the beaches of Crab Bank (and check out some of the shark teeth they found below! ??) It was amazing to witness so many firsts: kids experiencing their first time on the water, riding on a boat, or discovering a shark tooth. The smiles when Captain Connor sped up were unforgettable. It’s such an honor to help showcase the incredible work of organizations making a difference in our communities. Helping others help others is what drives me and I’m so grateful to collaborate with wonderful nonprofit groups like Coastal Expeditions. ?? #NonprofitPhotography #photographer #charleston

The Tuckernuck x Juliska "Find the Fun" Oyster Roast was a vibrant celebration of coastal traditions, bringing the community together for an evening of delicious food, vibrant tablescapes, and joyful company. The gathering featured Juliska’s new fall tabletop collection paired with Tuckernuck's signature linens, creating a stylish setting at Lowndes Grove. Oysters are essential for filtering water and supporting marine life. I recently volunteered to help create Manufactured Wire Reefs, which act as a substrate for new oyster growth. Just days before Hurricane Helene, I had the opportunity to photograph another beautiful Outstanding in the Field event at Smoky Mountain River Ranch in Waynesville, NC. It was a weekend filled with incredible people (and animals), amazing local food, lots of hiking, and apple picking. Now, those same communities are facing devastating losses. Though I didn’t witness the devastation firsthand, hearing about the destruction from Hurricane Helene has been heartbreaking. Many people in Charleston have been impacted in some way and local initiatives are already underway to raise funds and transport supplies. If you’re a local, please consider donating this week, whether it's money or essential items. Pelican Release at Crab Bank I had the privilege of joining the Coastal Expeditions Foundation, SC Rep. Spencer Wetmore, and The Center for Birds of Prey to release two rehabilitated Eastern Brown Pelicans at Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary. This was such a meaningful moment because, thanks to the hard work of these folks, the Brown Pelican is now officially South Carolina’s State Seabird!! Crab Bank, right at the mouth of Shem Creek, is a sanctuary for seabirds like the Brown Pelican, Black Skimmers, and many others. It’s basically Pelican Heaven, a predator-free zone where they can nest, rest, and feed. Watching the pelicans step out of their carriers, stretch their wings, and finally take flight (a little wobbly at first) was so incredible. They stuck together, splashed around, even tried to eat a few shells. We were all in awe of the special moment we were witnessing. Moments like this are a beautiful reminder of why conserving our coast is so important. ????
