New Years Eve is marked with people giving themselves resolutions. Many people will promise better health but how do you make this resolution last? Much is written about 'health systems' playing a key role building the relationships to encourage better health. However, people don't build relationships with systems. People build relationships with people. Direct primary care does exactly that. This year marks the 5th time over the last 114 years that Hanukkah has started on the same day as Christmas. It won't happen again until 2035. This rare alignment of Hanukkah and Christmas is a powerful opportunity to reflect on the shared values that unite us all—light, hope, peace, and togetherness. Primary care doctors today are perceived by many patients as "the referral person" or "the person to give me an annual physical". Many people are unaware of what it takes to be a primary care physician. The insurance and hospital system has devised primary care physicians to be "feeders" into the higher cost parts of the system as referral sources but primary care physicians can do so much more.
