As SALMON-SAFE gears up for further expansion across the interior Columbia Basin, Michelle McGrath is joining the team as program director. Michelle’s priority at Salmon-Safe will be to lead the rollout of our $6.3M EPA grant focused on reducing water quality impacts in the Basin. Prior to starting at Salmon-Safe, Michelle most recently was CEO of the American Cider Association. Throughout her career, Michelle has been a champion for farmers, value-added producers, food system sustainability, and environmental conservation. Her former work in this arena includes supporting farmers in the Columbia River Gorge with Gorge Grown Food Network. At Salmon-Safe, Michelle will be collaborating with partner organizations to implement water quality and climate resiliency improvements that expand the scope and geographic reach of Salmon-Safe’s longstanding work. Based at Salmon-Safe’s Portland HQ, Michelle will work in tandem with our Boise, Walla Walla and Spokane-based outreach team, and implementation partners across the region. Michelle starts with Salmon-Safe on Jan 1, 2025. #SalmonSafe #EnvironmentalLeadership #WaterQuality #ClimateResilience #SustainableAgriculture #Conservation #ColumbiaBasin #EPAFunding #EnvironmentalImpact #EcoLeadership #SustainableFarming #FoodSystemSustainability #ColumbiaRiverGorge #NonprofitLeadership #EnvironmentalStewardship

At the Deep Roots Coalition gathering of winegrowers in Portland, we presented our Hero of Salmon award to John Paul of Cameron Winery. In 1997, Cameron’s estate vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley was the first farm to achieve Salmon-Safe certification. John Paul also founded the Deep Roots movement of West Coast winegrowers committed to sustainable viticulture without irrigation. #DeepRootsCoalition #Winegrowers #SustainableViticulture #SalmonSafe #HeroOfSalmon #CameronWinery #WillametteValley

In partnership with the City of Seattle, we constructed four urban biofiltration swales bordering two properties to treat street runoff before reaching Lake Union. These swales filter contaminants from the water, equivalent to the top three feet of Lake Union each year, contributing to a healthier environment for our Seattle community and beyond. ?? Exciting times for sustainable initiatives! #SustainableBusiness #OregonPartners #SalmonSafe #Collaboration #EnvironmentalLeadership #SustainableSushi
As we have expanded our programming this year, one rewarding highlight has been meeting with more Japanese companies as they first touch ground in Oregon, and connecting them to a variety of public and private partners. On Monday this included fascinating discussions with Yvonne S. at Prosper Portland and the team of brewers at Hopworks Brewery, advocates at SALMON-SAFE, and the team overseeing sustainable sushi certification at Bamboo Sushi. The group visited over 20 locations in total over their two days with us.

Our Homestead homeowners at The Southard joined Site Story, SALMON-SAFE and Tilth Alliance to finish assembling the grattix boxes and oyster shell barrels at the development! These green features will remove pollutants from roof runoff—keeping the water flowing from our downspouts clear. This ensures the stormwater that travels from our Southard homes to the Puget Sound is healthy and clean for native salmon populations. Thus, certifying the ‘The Southard’ development as Salmon-Safe!? Our highly energy efficient, green-built Southard homes will provide 11 permanently affordable homeownership opportunities to income-qualified households. Households like Marisol, first-time homeowner and single mother of two daughters.? “I feel beyond grateful and blessed to become a first time homeowner through Homestead,” shared Marisol during our Southard community celebration this past June. “It has been a goal of mine for some time now, and this program allowed me to achieve it.” To learn more about Homestead’s incredible sustainability features at The Southard in Tukwila, visit www.thesouthard.com.
