A shout out for the shout out given by?Monterey County Office of Education?to our own Cheryl Camany and the team of our Family Resource Center, who were acknowledged by MCOE's Board of Trustees for their deep work with homeless youth. The honor, given at the last MCOE Board meeting, took place during National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. In 1998, when Sherwood Principal Everardo Marquez was a fifth grade teacher at the school, he had a brand new student show up to class. Victor Marinelli, he recalls, was kind of quiet, maybe a little shy but a fast learner with an interest in education who knew how to ask questions. Now, 26 years later, Victor Marinelli is a sixth grade teacher at Sherwood, working under the leadership of Mr. Marquez. Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing more legacy of learning stories, because in the SCESD, we have a number of former students who are now teachers, and a number of current principals who helped inspire those former students to follow in their footsteps. #stayconnected #scesdshines

While we've been happily celebrating Roosevelt School's 100th Birthday, we are also happily celebrating Filipino American History Month (FAHM), which takes place in the U.S. during the month of October. October was chosen by the Filipino American National Historical Society to commemorate the arrival of the first Filipinos who landed in what is now Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. It is also the birth month of Filipino-American labor leader Larry Itliong. To our staff and community members of Filipino heritage, we celebrate alongside and appreciate you! #pinoypride #scesdshines
