Values! What are values? Do you know yours? They are the foundation that keeps us going. They are our moral compass when we face decisions, big or small. Can we deviate from our foundation? Sure, I know I have a few times throughout my life, but when doing so, thankfully, I could recenter back to my values. I was on a coaching call this week with a client trying to decide whether or not to work with someone in their industry with some outward opinions that differed from their community's. However, this wasn't of concern to my client because he knew this person, and aside from these opinions, my client knew he was a good person. The concern was if he did work with him, how would this look to others in the community? I asked how he felt about it based on his values and not what others could think, which opened a new thought process for my client. The reality is that we cannot control how others think about us or others. Considering this, what we do know and can control is our values and how things either align with or contradict them. Might some people not like us or our decisions? For sure, but if how we conduct ourselves aligns with our value system, then it is much easier to be at peace with others disagreeing with us. This applies overall, but we need to make decisions that will have a ripple effect in business and sales. It is guaranteed that not all of our choices will be accepted or liked by all, but if they align with our values, then we can stand firmly on our foundation and continue looking forward. Dale Dupree pisses me off. Why? When Dale Dupree reached out and invited me to participate as a panelist at the inaugural Totality Sales Conference - the answer was an immediate yes. When he then shared the topic of the panel - "The End of Sales is Near" - my curiosity instantly piqued and my creative wheels started spinning. As a member of the faculty at the Department of Marketing at the University of Tennessee and its Director of Partnerships & Growth Initiatives, I am in a unique position to work with both students and partner companies daily to understand the perceptions of a variety of career pathways and the opportunities within them. These very same perceptions and insights, coupled with a few of the countless lessons learned throughout my 20 years of industry experience, were some of the things I was given space to share in a room filled with incredible Totality attendees. Even better, I had the privilege to do so with an amazing group of fellow panelists - Stephen Courson, Mike Simmons, and Austin Yardley, MBA - with our entire conversation moderated by the always awesome James "Saywhatsales" Buckley. This conference experience was authentic. It was memorable. It smashed perceptions and challenged misconceptions. And, to be frank, it was ???? ???????? ??????. (See pic below if you don't believe me). I'm counting the days until Totality returns and can't wait to see you all there. And to all the outstanding people I was fortunate to meet last Saturday - I can't wait to keep our conversations going.
