South Dakota's new timeline for remote sellers: how do you know when you're supposed to register and collect? Senate Bill 43 was signed into law last month in South Dakota. While new tax legislation is nothing out of the ordinary, South Dakota's bill provides a straightforward timeline that will be helpful for remote sellers and marketplace providers. Here's the timeline: ?A business meets South Dakota's sales tax thresholds ?? Thirty days pass ?On the first of the month after thirty days, the business must register and begin collecting sales tax. So, how will this help businesses? Businesses now have valuable time to prepare their finances and operations for the new sales tax requirements. This timeline is also helpful in case a business registers early, which is also a major issue. So, keep in mind that once meeting South Dakota's economic nexus legislation, you have to register and begin collecting sales tax on the first of the full month that begins at least 30 days after meeting the threshold. For example.... March 15, 2025: A business meets the sales tax thresholds April 15, 2025: The business has at least 30 days to prepare May 1, 2025: The business must register and begin collecting sales tax Click here for more info on the new timeline and South Dakota's economic nexus thresholds: https://lnkd.in/gJEFjTn2 #Nexus?#SouthDakota

Happy St. Patrick's Day! What does sales tax look like on the Emerald Isle? The first main point of distinction: Ireland utilizes VAT, or Value-Added Tax. Taxpayers in the United States may not be familiar with this system, as it has wildly different functions and intricacies. As an EU Member state, Ireland utilizes the VAT System based on EC Directives, which can impact local laws. Uniformity is a big deal for the EC Directives, which can sound like a dream for many US tax professionals who have to manage every state's individual definitions, exemptions, and regulations. However, the EC Directives allow every country to customize their use of VAT laws, including determining the VAT rate for themselves. Items sold in Ireland will have different rates than items sold in Germany, for example. If you're assuming that EU VAT works the same as US sales tax, you may be in for a rude awakening. Watch this training from Florian Hanslik and Diane Yetter for tips on how to manage VAT in the entire European Union: https://lnkd.in/gYdc7wVz #StPatricksDay #Ireland #VAT

Maine has issued an important notice for sales tax returns. Here's what's going on: Maine Revenue Services released a notice explaining how to properly claim credits on sales tax returns for goods purchased for resale. If you've filled out a Maine sales tax return, you're likely familiar with item 22, which asks for "Credit for Sales Tax Paid on Goods Purchased for Resale." This can be a tricky question, something that Maine aims to clarify with this new notice. https://lnkd.in/gBBdePyB ?#Tax #Accounting #Maine

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: you spend weeks setting up your software only for it to not work. Here’s what to do: Sales tax compliance shouldn’t feel like an uphill battle. But when you're juggling ever-changing nexus rules, marketplace facilitator laws, and jurisdictional quirks, it’s easy to feel like you're drowning in a sea of spreadsheets. That’s where sales tax software comes in. But here’s the catch—NOT all solutions are created equal. You might be investing in software that... ? Doesn’t integrate with your ERP or e-commerce platform? ? Fails to keep up with regulatory changes? ? Leaves gaps that STILL require manual intervention? ? Ends up costing more in errors than it saves in automation Your sales tax software shouldn’t make it harder to do your job. Here are the steps for selecting the software that works for you: ? Identify key features that matter for your business? ? Evaluate vendors beyond the sales pitch? ? Navigate common implementation challenges? ? Future-proof your tax tech strategy If you’re considering a software change—or even wondering if your current system is really working for you—watch our new on-demand training, Finding the Right Sales Tax Software for Your Needs! In 90 minutes, Diane Yetter provides an insider’s view of strengthening your company’s sales tax automation processes.? Let’s be honest, compliance is already complex. Your software shouldn’t make it harder. Watch now: #Software #automation #tax?

Most businesses don’t address sales tax until there’s a problem. By the time a state agency sends an audit notice, the damage is already done. One of the biggest mistakes companies make is assuming that if they haven’t been caught yet, they’re in the clear. But tax authorities are using more advanced tools than ever to track down unregistered businesses. When they do, the penalties can be severe. Voluntary Disclosure Agreements (VDAs) offer a critical opportunity to come forward before it’s too late. These agreements can help businesses: 1?? Reduce penalties and interest 2?? Limit the number of years they have to pay back taxes 3?? Gain peace of mind knowing they’re fully compliant But the key to a successful voluntary disclosure is timing and strategy. If you wait too long or take the wrong approach, you could lose valuable protections. Join Trisha Davidson, CMI and DiAndria Green - The SALTy Lawyer Dee of Bennett Thrasher for the Sales Tax Institute’s live webinar on March 25 to learn how to navigate voluntary disclosure programs and protect your business from costly mistakes. Date: March 25, 2025? Time: 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET? CPE: 1.8 credits #SALT #Compliance #Tax?
