When all else fails: Salem Health Ham Radio Group keeps the signal alive. Rare winter sunshine streams through an unassuming workroom tucked in the far corner of Salem Hospital’s seventh floor, where staff meet every Tuesday to check in with fellow Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Region 2 hospitals. They don’t use the internet, cell phones or even a landline. Their equipment is small, perched atop a desk. It can be powered by a car battery and held in two hands. Yet when disaster strikes, cell towers fall, phone lines snap and Wi-Fi crashes, this ham radio can carry the voice of Salem Health far across our darkened state, reaching people and communities in crisis. The Salem Health Ham Radio Group includes staff from Information Services, operating rooms and even a retired volunteer in Dallas. These self-described MacGyvers and cowboys/gals share a passion that transcends their day jobs. Together, they play a critical role in emergency preparedness, ensuring our hospitals and clinics stay connected during disasters. “We’re the last line of defense when everything else fails,” said Thomas Carmichael, systems applications analyst for Salem Health and Ham Radio Group president. The science of happiness: proven by our amazing research team. ?? The Salem Health Happiness Advantage research has made a huge impact! Their study, published in the prestigious Journal of Nursing Administration (JONA), proves that happiness isn’t just a feeling, it’s a skill you can build. The study team, led by Nancy Dunn, and co-investigators Sara Nash, Paul Howard and Frieda Ryan Anzur, found that a 21-day challenge increased participants' happiness by 17%, with long-lasting results even 18 months later! How? By doing small, science-backed activities daily like practicing gratitude or doing acts of kindness, you can actually retrain your brain to be happier. When asked about her biggest “ah-ha” moment, Nancy said “Everyone benefits from doing this self-improvement work, not just health care workers. You can retrain your brain to feel happier. Do something new—something you like to do -- 21 days in a row and you end up with a new habit. It’s contagious!” This works for all humans, not just health care workers. Nancy volunteers with the Community Health Education Center (CHEC) to help groups such as North Salem High School seniors understand and use the positive psychology intervention. She works with other groups in the community to embrace the positive psychology intervention for their employees. Huge congrats to our research team for this incredible achievement! ??
