The Salvation Army began offering assistance to disaster survivors after a major hurricane hit Galveston, TX in September 1900, destroying the coastal city and killing thousands of people. At the request of The Salvation Army’s National Commander, officers from across the country moved into the Galveston area to help feed and shelter the thousands of survivors, while also providing much needed emotional and spiritual support. Since then, The Salvation Army has responded to numerous natural disasters, transportation accidents, civil unrest situations, and terrorist attacks. By providing beverages, snacks, meals, and emotional and spiritual care to first responders and survivors, The Salvation Army strives to bring hope and healing to people who find themselves in the midst of extremely difficult situations.

In response to recent floods in Kentucky, The Salvation Army has served over 2,000 hot meals to flood survivors and first responders, distributed nearly 1,000 personal hygiene kits, and provided more than 250 cleanup kits to aid in recovery efforts. Among the volunteers was Jimmy and Judy Keen, a couple who lost their home in the Rowdy area during the devastating August 2022 flood. Water rose to their roofline, leaving their house a total loss. Now they serve others impacted by flooding, returning every Friday to volunteer with The Salvation Army unit in Perry County. Reflecting on their service, Judy Keen shared, “We know firsthand what it’s like to lose everything. Volunteering with The Salvation Army gives us the chance to give back and offer hope to others who are facing the same heartbreak we did.” #HopeIsOnTheWay #Volunteer #WhyIVolunteer #loveBeyondDisaster Read more: https://loom.ly/KOacKO8
