#CanadianThanksgiving is held on the second Monday of October. When the Salvation Army Incident Management team in Sarasota, Florida realized that the teams of Canadian volunteers who had deployed for #HurricaneMilton response would miss Thanksgiving with their families, they decided to give them a celebration dinner at basecamp as a tiny thank you for coming to help out in Florida.

Despite being broken into divisional, territorial, and even national units, The Salvation Army is one army when called upon to serve in disaster affected communities. #HurricaneMilton response continues in Florida. Salvation Army teams are on the ground with meals, drinks, and emotional and spiritual care even for the littlest of survivors. Sarah spoke with us about sharing candy and stickers with the children in line and allowing them to share their stories as well.

From Illinois to the Southeast US, Midwest Food Bank has packed more than 10,400 food boxes and 3,000 clean-up kits to send to Salvation Army disaster relief operations in three states to help survivors of #HurricaneHelene and #HurricaneMilton recover.

The Salvation Army joined the Florida National Guard and Walmart at a community distribution site in Hardee County, yesterday, to provide critical support to #HurricaneMilton survivors. Together, the organizations handed out water, hot meals, and cleaning supplies. Governor Ron DeSantis visited the operation to show solidarity with the community and express his gratitude to the volunteers. #hopeIsOnTheWay

She’s known as the Candy Lady, but her name is Dee. Beyond her sweet title, Dee wears many hats: she’s a business owner, a member of the Advisory Board for The Salvation Army, and a dedicated disaster relief volunteer assisting in Western North Carolina after Helene. Every evening after dinner, Dee and other dedicated disaster workers fill plastic grocery bags with candy, ensuring that each mobile feeding unit can share a sweet treat as a simple expression of love for the people they serve. “A piece of candy can bring so much joy to people—from children to big, burly men!” Dee said with a smile. “I’ve watched the most stoic mothers and the toughest men crumble over a piece of chocolate.
