Last night we all ran from our HQ in Farringdon, across Hyde Park to The Serpentine Gallery to see the work of the great Barbara Kruger. We weren’t disappointed. Rooms filled head to toe with her images. Stepping inside you couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by these dynamic thoughtforms. And of course there it was, the re-worked Descartes quote “I think therefore I am” turned into the consumerist phrase that summed up the decades of the last thirty years “I shop therefore I am” In 1987 when she showcased this across the capital, her intention was to allow us to rethink our idea of materialism and consumerism. Boy was she ahead. It’s taken us decades for the penny to drop. So, we thought it would be fun to do our own Portas appropriation of Kruger’s work, as so many have done before, and of which she has both loved and loathed. We asked our team to finish off the “I shop therefore I am”, to reflect on their own consumption and shopping habits, what is it that reflects their philosophy of living and buying today. 2024 style. And we want to hear yours. From all across the UK and abroad, how do you shop? Has your relationship to shopping changed? What goes on in your head, your heart, your conscience?
