On Trans Day of Remembrance, we honor the lives of trans people lost to violence, including those within South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities who face unique challenges shaped by cultural stigma and systemic inequities. This is a time to reflect on the rising transphobia globally and locally and to recommit to supporting trans individuals in our communities. Their safety, dignity, and voices must remain at the heart of our work toward justice. Let’s remember those we’ve lost and continue to fight for a future where every trans person can live freely and authentically. #TransDayofRemembrance #TDoR #ProtectTransLives

Survivors in NYC’s immigrant and BIPOC communities face rising domestic violence but lack sufficient support. The Collective (KAFSC (Korean American Family Service Center), Sakhi for South Asian Survivors, Violence Intervention Program, Womankind, fka New York Asian Women's Center and Sauti Yetu Center for African Women, Inc) highlights the need for equitable funding, culturally specific services, and housing and mental health care resources. ?? Last week, we joined the Kensington community in Shahana Hanif's 39th Council District at their Food Drive, distributing groceries and sharing information about our services for survivors. Connecting with so many neighbors committed to mutual support and resilience was inspiring. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to make a difference in our community! ?? #CommunitySupport #KensingtonBK #SakhiForSouthAsianSurvivors

Today’s election outcome is a painful reminder of the barriers that continue to hold back progress for women, immigrants, queer communities, and survivors of violence. While the setbacks dishearten us, Sakhi stands unwavering in our commitment to uplift and protect the most vulnerable among us. This is a moment that calls for resilience, solidarity, and action. For those who feel fear, anger, or exhaustion in the face of harmful policies, know we are here to support you. We will continue to fight for safety, dignity, and justice, and we invite our community to stand with us. Now more than ever, we must draw strength from each other and push toward a more just future. Join us in the continuous fight for justice to protect our rights and build a world where all of us can thrive. Read our complete statement: https://ow.ly/zF1Q50U1Aaf

New Yorkers, let’s protect our reproductive rights for good! ??? Passing Prop 1 this election would allow us to secure abortion, birth control, and IVF rights in the state constitution—safeguarding these freedoms for everyone, including survivors of violence who deserve safe, supportive care. Find Prop 1 on the back of your ballot, and vote YES whether you are voting early or on Election Day. Let's make history for freedom and equality. #VoteYesOnProp1

Thank you, IFF, for collaborating with Sakhi during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We’re grateful to ACE & Women at IFF for opening this vital dialogue on gender justice and domestic violence. The opportunity to share our work, connect, and create care packages made this event both meaningful and impactful. Thank you for standing with us in support of survivors. ??
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October) our two colleague communities at IFF - ACE & Women at IFF held a collab event with Sakhi for South Asian Survivors to bring awareness on topics such as gender justice, domestic violence, and its prevalence in South Asian communities. We had a riveting discussion at the IFF - New York office, where we spoke to Nisa Sheikh from Sakhi and her team about their organization and what services they offer to the survivors. We also got to make care packages for the DV survivors! This was not only a fun activity, but a great way for the attendees to feel that they are also giving back to that community. Thank you for all those who had attended and thank you Sakhi for South Asian Survivors for the presentation and opportunity for us to discuss a heavy, yet, important topic. #domesticviolence #domesticviolencewareness #inclusion #diversity #southasian #ace #womenatiff #collabevent #weareiff #iff

This election season, survivors’ rights are on the ballot. Policies on healthcare, immigration, and legal protections shape the safety and well-being of marginalized communities, including South Asian and Indo-Caribbean survivors. Sakhi emphasizes that systemic change is essential—beyond services, real progress requires leaders committed to equity and justice. As Domestic Violence Awareness Month continues, let’s vote for policies that uplift survivors and ensure their rights are protected. Gender-based violence (GBV) organizations play a vital role in supporting survivors, but many lack the funding needed to grow and sustain their impact. In an article published in Inside Philanthropy titled "Gender-Based Violence Organizations Are Scalable: An Urgent Call for Philanthropy," our Executive Director, Kavita Mehra, shares insights on how philanthropy must provide long-term, flexible funding to help these community-driven efforts thrive and meet rising challenges in the movement. Franky Dean’s inspiring journey from an unaware survivor to a passionate advocate illustrates the power of sharing survivor stories. Influenced by Nisha Pahuja's documentary TO KILL A TIGER, she found the courage to confront her past and seek support. Franky’s story, along with the narratives in the film, powerfully emphasizes the necessity of acknowledging and supporting survivors, illustrating how their voices are essential in the pursuit of justice and meaningful change.
