?? SLU’s Bob Pasken, Ph.D., (Meteorology) a weather expert with over 20 hurricane flights, spent last week tracking Hurricane Milton. His research focuses on what makes storms like Milton so powerful, with winds reaching 165 mph. Pasken says it’s not just the wind, but debris flying at those speeds that poses the greatest danger. Great advice for early-career researchers!
?? Expert Tips for New Researchers! ? Dr. Paula Buchanan,?Director for #AHEAD Consulting and Training Services, leads the?GME-AHEAD Research Training Program?to equip residents and fellows with the knowledge ?? and tools ?? necessary for successful #research outputs. We asked Dr. Buchanan for her top research tips for new researchers:? 1. ?? Research projects should be approached with careful consideration.?Before designing your study, it is crucial to carefully conceptualize and operationalize your investigation. Take time to critically think through how you will measure your variables, ensuring they are specific, clear, and unambiguous. 2. ?? When you first examine your data, check for missing variables, unusual or impossible values, outliers, and the overall distributions. Understand the basic descriptive statistics of your dataset before proceeding with other analyses. 3. ?? Researchers often ask me, "How many subjects do I need?"?To estimate sample size, there are five key elements to consider: power, effect size, type I error rate, variability, and, of course, the sample size itself. If you know four of these elements, you can calculate the fifth. Typically, researchers aim for 80% power and a type I error rate of 0.05. The effect size is often chosen based on prior knowledge, and statisticians typically have little input on what the effect size should be for a particular study. Whether the effect size is clinically or statistically significant depends on your expertise as the researcher, and statisticians rely on you to make the most appropriate decision.
