?? With the shift to School Meeting members sitting in a circle to: - share announcements ??, - facilitate discussions ???, - and manage their school ??, we have noticed increased participation. Interesting to note. May be a worthwhile experiment for your learning community or work environment. Report back if you happen to try. Picture just for fun - some of us recently visited the Missouri History Museum to enjoy “An Unlikely Hero”, performed by Metro Theater Company! #selfdirected #democratic #school #education #stl #sudbury #asde #respect #trust #children #autonomy #selfmanagement #leadership #community #learning #lifeskills

?? Overheard at the playground, “they don’t let you climb at school, do they? Sit down. I hope not.” ?? Hmmm, why? Don’t we wonder why conventional schools prevent children from their natural adventures, curiosity, and problem solving? We wonder and, daily, we experience a different way, an aligned way of learning. As always, please ask us about that. #curiosity #school #learning #respect #autonomy #trust #saintlouis #stlsudbury #selfdirected #democratic #education #leadership #lifeskills #community #problemsolving

?? Why is a school posting on LinkedIn, a professional website? It seems that many of us are on this platform to help, to offer support, to consult, coach, teach, or train our business world out of the problems they are encountering. What if, instead (or, at least, in addition to), we didn't need to undo what conventional school environments did...? Where do we learn to micromanage, to mistrust, to compete (at any cost), to grab a solution before actually understanding the problem...? ???? ???????????? ???????????????????????? ???????????????? ??????????????, ??????????????????, ?????? ?????????????????????? ???????????????? ?????? ????????????????????????????, ???????? ?????????? ???? ?????????????????? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ????????????????????????? ?? What if there was a way to sense if schooling was serving you and your family, or not? ?? Maybe it’s a question, perhaps, “???? ?????????????????? ???????????????????? ???????? ???????? ???? ???????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????? ?????????? ?????? ?????? ?????????????” Where did we learn that work had to be miserable, something we dread, and just do because that’s the way it is? Perhaps it was during school? In earlier conventional education settings, where we learned that learning was rote memorization, directed by what others thought you had to know, without your input, based on standardized testing, and attendance at any cost…perhaps? What seems Truer to you - that learning is something done to you and to be dreaded OR that it is natural, flowing from our innate curiosity, and based upon our own pursuits and passions? When we see the latter as learning, ease begins to show itself and tension (the non consensual kind) melts away. Please be encouraged to ask us about that. #school #learning #joy #curiosity #saintlouis #stlsudbury #selfdirected #democratic #education #leadership #respect #trust #deming #robinson #futureofeducation #unschooling #asde

?? Engagement is the cake, not the icing. Well said, Don Berg; thank you! #school #learning #saintlouis #stlsudbury #selfdirected #democratic #education #intrinsicmotivation #respect #trust #autonomy #leadership #community
Helping K-12 school leaders to improve the climate of their schools using the science of Self-Determination Theory.
Schools currently operate as if engagement is a form of psychological icing on the cake of schooling, but the best available science shows that engagement is not the icing, it is the cake. Academic skills, knowledge, and information are the icing. Here's a link to my video that explains this idea further using a different metaphor. https://buff.ly/49r4nvB

?? But how will my child learn to read? ?? A common, welcome, and very real question we occasionally hear from adults. Reading is quite useful (if not necessary) for a modern life. So, trust them, your child will learn to read. Here is one Sudbury model parent, remembering the unique paths to reading for her own kiddos: https://lnkd.in/g-ixWCzP Kids learn to crawl, to walk, to talk. Why would we expect them not to learn to read? #trust #reading #learning #saintlouis #stlsudbury #school #selfdirected #democratic #education #freetolearn #leadership #community #respect #unschooling #homeschooling #lifeskills #parenting #childlikewonder #asde
The post which provoked this wasn't (in my opinion) actually one of my most controversial and so I'm surprised at this response. Here's what I said in its entirety. "Discovery learning involves trying things out, experimenting and getting it wrong. This is how young children learn. Instruction is a far less efficient way to do this, as anyone who has spent any time with 3-7 year olds can tell you. You can tell children things as many times as you want. You can read a perfectly designed script that explains phonics. And then that child will turn around and say 'How can I become a caterpillar?' and your speech is halted in its tracks. What we say to children and what they learn are very different things. Children learn through discovery and play. If we don't understand that, then we do them a grave disservice." This is clearly something which really touches a nerve with people and makes them want to discredit me. To me, it seems obvious that young children learn best through play, but to him that's disinformation.
