If you're near #porteverglades come meet Adam P. and say hello!
Being relatively new to the #Maritime industry has been quite an experience. I’m learning a lot about shipping routes, engine rooms, and of course the people. I’m very much interested and open to meeting more folks to learn about their challenges and problems, and how I can help solve them: especially as it relates to reducing carbon emissions, and managing fuel spend. Bring my tech and finance experience is a different lens and different perspectives unlock new insights. #sustainability

A lot of people ask me why direct #CO2 #emissions measurements differ so significantly from fuel-based CO2 estimates. Let’s take a quick look at how these CO2 emissions factors are created. How is CO2 created? CO2 is formed by the combustion of fuel. Carbon atoms from the fuel combine with oxygen atoms from the air to form CO2. The atomic weight of carbon is 12. The atomic weight of oxygen is 16. Now you can add them up: Combine those, you get 12(C) + 16(O) + (16)O = 44. So 44 divided by 12 = 3.67. Therefore, CO2 is approximately 3.67 times heavier than carbon. Diesel fuel is about 86% carbon and other types of marine fuels have more or less carbon content. So one ton of diesel fuel containing (86% carbon) produces approximately 3,150 kgs of CO2 when combusted. And for each ton of fuel we burn, we therefore generate about 3.15 kgs of #carbon dioxide. Voila! So that’s how the CO2 emissions factors were created. It’s basic chemistry. The emissions factors that you use to report CO2 emissions from fuel were created this way! #decarbonization #climate

Just like coriolis meters replaced outdated methods of fuel reporting using tank-levels, direct #CO2 emissions measurements provide unsurpassed accuracy in CO2 reporting - far better than what off-the-shelf emissions factors can do. And in this case, precision can save you money and improve your CII rating. Contact us to learn how SailPlan's data platform + direct measurements can benefit your CII rating - instantly. https://lnkd.in/ebfR9yJ8 #shipping #CII #maritime #emissions #IMO

Ever wonder how your ?? CO2 emissions factors were created? See below for a quick dive into the world of emissions! ??
A common question I get is why SailPlan's direct #emissions monitoring can differ so much from traditional fuel-based estimation methods. To clear this up, here's a quick dive into some basic chemistry. ?? How is CO2 formed? CO2 is produced during the combustion of fuel, where carbon atoms from the fuel combine with oxygen from the air. The atomic weight of carbon is 12, and oxygen is 16. When you do the math: 12 (C) + 16 (O) + 16 (O) = 44 you see that CO2 is roughly (44/12) 3.67 times heavier than carbon. For example, diesel fuel is about 86% carbon. This means that if you have a metric ton of diesel fuel, you're dealing with about 860 kg of carbon. Applying our chemistry, 1 kg of carbon will produce approximately 3.67 kg of CO2. So, burning one metric ton of diesel fuel (containing 860 kg of carbon) generates around 3.156 kgs of CO2.?So you're emissions factor is around this number, depending on the specific carbon content of your fuel. ? So this emissions factor is actually an upper-bound estimate—a worst-case scenario—because fuel doesn't burn uniformly across the load range of an engine. In reality, combustion efficiency varies, meaning that not all carbon is converted into CO2. But no matter how efficient it is, direct emissions cannot be greater than the emissions factor itself. That’s why direct emissions monitoring, like what SailPlan provides, often shows lower CO2 levels, sometimes dramatically lower. It measures actual emissions in real time, accounting for these variations and providing a more precise, accurate picture of your emissions profile. So, while emissions factors give you a general estimate, direct monitoring offers a true reflection of what’s happening in real-world conditions. Hope this helps clear up any confusion!
