The latest on FOX Weather, Saildrone VP Ocean Mapping Brian Connon joined to discuss the company’s first survey of Florida’s coastal waters. “You need to have high-resolution bathymetry as your baseline,” Connon said of coastal resiliency data as it relates to hurricanes, “That way, as the model is running and as the conditions are changing, we’re able to predict where the water will be the highest…and better predict which areas might get severe flooding.” Watch the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/gWSy4SWa

Two Voyager USVs set out from Saildrone’s St. Petersburg facility to map Florida’s coastal waters in support of coastal resilience and emergency response. Contributing to the Florida Seafloor Mapping Initiative, Saildrone will conduct our first unmanned survey in the region, collecting high-resolution data that will be used to create a public portal for the new information and imagery. “Saildrone is proud to support the Florida Seafloor Mapping Initiative with our unique and innovative Voyager USVs. As a member of the St. Petersburg community, we are excited to contribute to a project that seeks to improve our coastal resilience and enhance our ability to predict storm surge impacts by providing high-resolution bathymetry,” said Brian Connon, Saildrone VP Ocean Mapping. By uniting government agencies, developers, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and researchers, it improves modeling, provides evaluation tools, and informs future lease area spacing. ??? Supply Chain Advancement – Private Sector Finalist:?Crowley and Technical Validation of Existing U.S. Flagged Barges as a “Feeder” Solution for the U.S. Offshore Wind Industry This project explores the feasibility of utilizing existing U.S.-flagged barges as feeder vessels, providing a cost-saving solution to project development logistical challenges. ?? By reducing project development costs and increasing U.S. vessel opportunities, this effort supports NOWRDC’s mission to grow a robust and competitive domestic offshore wind supply chain. NOAA Fisheries scientists combined observations from Saildrone USVs and a commonly used machine-learning algorithm to estimate krill abundance in 2020—after COVID-19 canceled the annual acoustic trawl survey. 3 Saildrone Explorers transited 2,000 nautical miles to the Bering Sea to survey Alaska pollock, America's most valuable commercial fishery. The data collected was also used to fill the 2020 gap in krill data. "Large-scale surveys can be disrupted for any number of reasons—such as mechanical breakdown, instrument failure, and even unexpected events like a global pandemic. Uncrewed surface vehicles provide a pragmatic way to address some of the challenges faced in continuing long-term survey time series," writes Ocean News & Technology.
