As editorial director at BoatU.S Magazine, Bernadette Bernon draws from her many years of experience researching and writing news and feature stories, working as a community organizer for VISTA, contributing to mainstream magazines, and traveling the world in her job as editorial director of "Cruising World" and "Sailing World." As a lifelong sailor, Bernadette and her husband took a seven-year 'break" to spend on their own cruising adventure, inspiring her editorial achievements while making history in the marine publishing business; BoatU.S. Magazine is now distributed to 700,00 boat owners with a dozen excellence awards this year alone from Boating Writers International. In her spare time, Bernadette mentors high school students preparing for college or tech school. "I wanted to be outside working on the boats." Not only has she taught sailing to children, adults, and people with disabilities, she worked in several positions at boatyards where she learned how to step and unstep rigs, splice and inspect rigging. A spot opened up at the Hinckley rigging shop, and 10 years later, she says, "I'm still loving it." For Women's History month, we’ve decided to recognize women in our local marine industry forging the way for other women and making new history. Zoe Steele, of 7 Star Marine has a passion for mechanical systems and works in the field of engineering for yachts, commercial, and military vessels. She grew up in a sailing and boatbuilding family in Nova Scotia, gained sea time all over the world, and worked locally on boats including the Swan "Lolita" and Gunboat "Looking for Elvis." Sail Newport is looking for a regatta coordinator for the 2025 sailing season. This April - November position is full-time, seasonal. The Challenger Lecture Series next presents Keith Stokes who will join us on Thursday, February 27 at 6 p.m. to present the peculiar institution of slavery in Newport, Rhode Island, which had its start and evolution with the sea providing one of the best paths for African freedom and prosperity “African Heritage Mariners in the Colonial Era” provides an interpretation of how seafaring was one of the most significant occupations among enslaved and free African heritage men during the 18th and 19th centuries. The presentation will include an in-depth review of Newport’s role within the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the evolution of African mariners, and the use of the sea as an early path to freedom. Presentation images of historic artifacts will come from the collections of the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society.
