Our agricultural safety seminars return to the Willamette Valley next week with stops in Eugene (Dec. 3), Salem (Dec. 4), and Corvallis (Dec. 5). Can’t attend in-person? Check out our webinar session offered on Dec. 10 - 11. Here are the topics covered in the 2024-25 ag safety seminar sessions: ??Navigating Oregon OSHA’s top citations Join us as we delve into Oregon OSHA’s top 10 agricultural citations. Learn how to ensure compliance with pesticide and other chemical handling, PPE use, regulations on labor housing along with toilet and hand washing facilities, proper safety committees, and more. ??Coexistence with agricultural chemicals (revisited) For many of us, pesticides and other chemicals are a fact of life. But if handled improperly, chemicals on our farms can pose significant health hazards and financial liabilities. This training will focus on tips, tricks, and best practices in the ever-evolving topic of chemical handling, application, and storage. ??Winter warriors: Cold stress safety on the farm Cold stress safety training is essential to prevent hypothermia, frostbite, and other cold-related illnesses. This hour will cover proper layering of clothing, recognizing early signs of cold stress, implementing warm-up breaks, and discussing what other farms are doing to combat the effects of cold stress farm workers throughout Oregon. ??Emergency first aid on the farm If not properly treated, a traumatic bleeding wound can lead to loss of life in as little as two minutes. Do you and your employees have the skills and tools to stop a massive hemorrhage on your farm in the case of an emergency? This hour-long training prepares you to stop the bleed and save lives.

Most workplaces have at least a few hazardous chemicals on site, including cleaning supplies. Depending on how they are used, you may need a safety data sheet (SDS) for your cleaning chemicals. In most cases, you must provide warning labels and other safety information, plus train workers to use these materials properly. But did you know that you also must have a written plan that describes how you’ll keep employees safe while using and working around hazardous chemicals? My mind went quiet,” says Malcolm Hoover, who co-founded Black Futures Farm with his wife, Mirabai Collins, under the Black Food Sovereignty Council & Coalition. With over an acre of land on the grounds of Learning Gardens Lab in southeast Portland, Black Futures Farm donates all food—from pears and persimmons to kale and collard greens—to the community it seeks to serve and empower.
