Why do our families live in Minnesota? Behind that question, for almost every immigrant, is a story. There are basic elements: who, what, where, when? There’s also a why. Over time, these narratives and family history can get lost. On Thursday, February 20, we’re hosting a Sahan Journal Community Live and MPR News’ North Star Journey Live event at the SPNN (Saint Paul Neighborhood Network). This community conversation will explore how individuals and families are compiling, recording, and sharing their immigration stories. We’ll collect suggestions and tools for collecting immigration narratives. And we’ll learn about how Minnesotans are?preserving their cultures in Minnesota.? Immigration reporters Katelyn Vue and Sarah Thamer will speak with Diego Guaman, Julie V., Marian Hassan and Saengmany Ratsabout about the importance of sharing immigration stories and preserving cultural traditions. What rights do immigrants have in Minnesota? How can people prepare for encounters with ICE? What can you do to support the community? We’ll answer your immigration questions TODAY from 1-2 p.m. on Sahan Journal’s Instagram Live with legal and policy experts from The Advocates for Human Rights. We’ll hear from people supporting asylum seekers, immigrants held in ICE detention, and noncitizen children, as Minnesotans face a wave of new legal threats. *Note: This is an informational event. Our guests can not answer legal questions or give legal advice in a public setting.

We’re pleased to share some good news! This year, Sahan Journal has been experimenting with AI to support the work we do in our reporting, publishing, and revenue development. This week, we learned that Sahan will be receiving a grant from @American Journalism Project to expand on those efforts, as part of a $1.4 million initiative dedicated to nonprofit newsrooms. We’ll be using this funding as part of a collaborative group, exploring AI to address shared newsroom challenges. We’re excited about the support and the opportunity to learn from other amazing newsrooms. https://lnkd.in/gjvpBzMf
