Reflections on year 6 as CEO of Sage Digi. I wondered for a long time how my music major would pay off. Here it is. As an 8-year-old, I learned how to do "vibrato" on the violin. Vibrato is creating the beautiful wobble in a note like when Whitney hits the high notes. This took resting my scroll against a wall, turning on the metronome to 60 clicks per minute, and then placing a single finger on the string. I moved my finger about 2 millimeters up and then down to each click of the metronome. The resulting sound was that of a cat in estrus. Through sheer will, determination, and passion, I clicked that metronome up one notch from 60 beats per minute to 61, 62...and ultimately to 200. Then I moved on to the second finger, third, then pinky. By the time I could perform an acceptable pinky vibrato, two birthdays had passed. But I could do it. Spend another 8 years to finesse the sound and voila, a concertmistress is born. And thus launched my early understanding that countless hours of work do lead to mastery. Talent is overrated. I believe mastery is 99% work, 1% talent. When launching a company, I was much like 8-year-old, pre-vibrato Sharon. I could hold the darn violin, but could I make it sing? No. When I first launched Sage Digi, I learned many new "vibratos." I learned to conquer my fears and ask for higher rates. I learned to let go of my attachment to a salary and gave all the money to my first employee. I became a "we." We created 5 versions of our website. We learned the art of SEO. We solved larger, more complex data problems. We grew into a team! We launched massive ad campaigns crossing into the $BILLIONS managed. And we learned how to ride horseback in the canyons of Mexico! We are now a team of 12. Does that make us a chamber orchestra? I dare say yes. So work. If you are a founder, learn to transform yourself faster con brio. Let your ego slide into the abyss and become a student of everything. Never quit. Sell into a "down market." Make your pipeline so strong that markets won't even matter anymore.
