Their early practices laid the foundation for today’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards, particularly in industries like construction and oil & gas, and wildfire management. ?? For centuries, Indigenous tribes such as the Miwok and Yurok in Northern California developed effective ways to protect themselves in fire-prone environments. They used buckskin, a dense, durable material made from animal hides. While buckskin is not inherently fireproof, its natural density and the application of oils made it more resistant to catching fire than thinner fabrics and helped shield Native Americans from burns during controlled burns and other fire-related activities. These same principles of protection are echoed in modern Flame-Resistant (FR) clothing. Designed to self-extinguish and resist ignition, FR fabrics provide essential protection in high-risk environments. Just as the Miwok relied on buckskin to guard against fire, today’s workers depend on advanced FR clothing to stay safe from burn injuries in industries where every second counts. Controlled burns—also known as prescribed fires—were a vital tool for Native tribes to manage the land, reducing the risk of larger, uncontrolled wildfires and promoting a healthier ecosystem. Today, California is steadily reintroducing these Indigenous fire management practices as a response to the devastating wildfires that have increased across the state in the past few years.
