When healing from abuse, it can take time to notice the small changes adding up. Progress may seem slow, but every step forward, no matter how small, contributes to your overall healing. Over time, these small changes accumulate, leading to substantial growth. Celebrate your resilience and remember that healing is a journey, not a race. Give yourself grace and acknowledge the strength it takes to keep moving forward.

14 days until our Faces of Courage benefit gala featuring Katrina Brownlee! https://lnkd.in/gWReZa-t Katrina has spent a lifetime defying the odds. At 22, she was shot 10 times by her abusive fiancé, an NYPD corrections officer shielded by his badge each time she called the police. "Every time he would flash that badge, they would walk away. That badge was much more important than my life," she said in her 48 Hours special "The Good Cop." After her near-homicide, she had to claw her way out of poverty on her own, all while in intensive physical therapy, progressing from a wheelchair, to a walker, to a cane, desperate to escape homelessness with her children. She took a job at the NYPD, vowing to change the broken system from within. When she retired as one the highest-ranking detectives, she was Mayor Bill de Blasio's advanced security detail, and is set to release a book this year detailing her journey. Hear more of Katrina's remarkable story at the 4th annual Faces of Courage benefit gala on Friday, April 11. All proceeds benefit Treasure Valley nonprofit Faces of Hope, providing a safety net of immediate crisis services to anyone experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, stalking, and human trafficking. Thank you to our lead sponsors, Zions Bank and E-M Construction.

Abuse isolates and silences survivors. Believing them breaks that silence. Often the first person a survivor will tell is a close friend or family member. If they aren't believed or are dismissed by that person, they are less likely to tell anyone else or seek professional help. People rarely make up stories about abuse. Do not express skepticism (even if the perpetrator is someone you know well) or ask a lot of questions, which can come off as victim blaming even with the best intentions. Try to remain calm even if you are shocked and upset. Tell them you believe them and let them know they have options. Let's end the stigma of disbelief.

Our victim advocate Megan recommends "The Johns: Sex for Sale and the Men Who Buy It" by Victor Malarek. This exposé is a follow-up to "The Natashas: Inside the New Global Sex Trade," which focuses more on the organized networks of sex trafficking in Eastern Europe. Malarek takes a hard look not at the victims themselves but at the people who perpetuate the industry through their demand. He highlights the systemic abuse and coercion that often isn't the focus of the industry, and investigates what motivates these men and how society enables their behavior. Content warnings: explicit language, sexual violence, human trafficking, grooming. Check it out here: https://ow.ly/ebXr50VkSwY

Jette's been volunteering with us since she joined us at a tabling event last spring! She was instrumental in cleaning, unpacking, and organizing our new Boise location.?We sure are lucky to have her time and skills after a 25-year career in project management! ??? Q&A with Jette Kleis Jensen - PMP ? ?What's your "why?" Faces of Hope is filled with passionate people dedicated to bringing hope to every client. Every client who walks through the doors is met with kindness and support from the team and I love seeing the difference in their eyes when they leave a session. They walk out with their heads held a little higher than when they came, and that is what keeps me coming back. It always impacts me when children come to Faces of Hope. They are always welcome here. Kids are very resilient, but when they come in, it's important they feel safe and supported while their parents receive support. As a volunteer, my goal is to give them a break from what they and their family are going through and give them a welcoming space where they can feel at ease and simply be kids no matter their circumstances. ?What do you like to do in your free time? I love spending time outdoors biking, swimming, walking, or running, and I always try to read the books recommended by the Faces of Hope staff. ?What's something we may not know about you? One thing you might not know about me is that in 2022, I completed an Ironman. What I took away from that experience is that it’s all about the journey - clients coming to Faces of Hope are on their own journeys and it's not always an easy one. I'm grateful to be part of their journey. To find out more, visit https://lnkd.in/gSW2639k

Domestic abuse is a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Everyone deserves a relationship free from abuse. Help is available. You are not alone.
