???????? ???????? 2025 ???? ????????? And how has 2024? These are the questions we often hear these days. No one can tell us; I am convinced that we cannot delegate to anyone the efforts to achieve our goals, both professional and personal. All I can say is that in the last few years my professional life has changed and my curiosity, study and search for something new and different has made me meet extraordinary people and experience some very intense moments. I thank all the people I met in 2024 and wish everyone a 2025 full of curiosity and meaningful encounters. ?????????? ???????????????? ?? ???????????? Prendo in prestito la famosa frase del ???????????????????? ???????????????? ?????????????????????????? all’??????????????????à ???? ???????????? #UNIPD. ?? ???????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ? I borrow the famous phrase of ?????????????? ???????????????? ?????????? of the A-Team because last Thursday I completed a cycle. Almost six years later, I read again my thesis to discuss the synergy between ???????????? ?????????????????????? approach and the concepts of Lean Thinking at an extra event during the ???????? ?????????????????????????? Master at the ???????????????????? ???? ??????????. Prof. Roberto Panizzolo's invitation was very welcome and the interest of the participants confirmed that safety is built in the sharp-end and not by the technicians. It was interesting to read again some sections of the thesis and see how many concepts of the ???????????? ?????????????????????? approach I had included without even knowing it. That work was probably the spark that led me to look for a different way of doing safety and to meet Robert de Boer and Sidney Dekker to radically change my professional life.

This week I’m exploring the metaphor of ?????????????????? ???????????????????????? and the challenge it presents. After attending an excellent workshop organised by Jean-Christophe Le Coze, I’ve been reflecting on how local expertise, tacit knowledge and experience on-the-job is increasingly replaced by the standardised, generic and measurable views of competency, as defined in management systems, processes and metrics. In mapping the abstract concept ?????????????????? (representing local expertise and know how) with the physical movement of ????????????????????????, the metaphor conjures up the image of practical expertise and the tacit being physically replaced or over-shadowed by measurable and standardised representations of competency. The tacit and intangible that is the essence of “know how” is subsumed by the standardised, static, measurable and commoditised representations of competence. ?????????????????? ???????????????????????? captures how organisations can come to view and value technical expertise, judgement and experience, such as safety and quality, through generic training courses, standard procedures and compliance reporting. Underlying the metaphor are deeper questions of what is considered valid and useful knowledge, and who gets to define this. Tacit knowledge, judgement and the 'art of the task' are replaced with definable, standardised and repeatable representations of knowledge that can be documented, measured, audited and reported. This is the effect of managerialism, where something cannot be valued it has little value. Like an eclipse, ?????????????????? ???????????????????????? eventually blocks out the informal knowledge with those views of competency that can be documented, measured, verified and defended. Over time, the organisation comes to view competency with these generic representations. Local expertise, skill and tacit knowledge is subsumed into a world of training records and competency is viewed through the coloured lens of the Red, Amber and Green compliance metrics. Welcome to ?????????????????? ????????????????????????. I had a whirlwind October both personally and professionally! Dealt with some serious personal stuff and was so deep in the trenches that I couldn't see past 24 hours (thanks to my 4 year old and 82 year old stubborn Italian father) and dealt with some professional super high highs like my spin the bottle Energy Wheel coming to fruition as well as being invited to travel to Europe and learn from 16 incredible humans from around the globe in a Safety Differently Masterclass in Venice. I also had the opportunity to conduct interviews with some amazing individuals in the Netherlands doing Safety Differently for the commencement of my PhD. What I really wanted to share now though is- You will see various master-classes come and go on LinkedIn but if you're looking for one that will provide you with tangible results, one where you can learn immensely and then literally the next day, head back to your organisation and implement your learnings immediately you will want to keep an eye out for the Safety Differently Masterclass facilitated by Dr Robert J. de Boer and sidneydekker.com himself. The next class is in the beautiful Cancun but for my Aussie connections, stay tuned for this side of the globe, in the middle of 2025 when the learning comes to Singapore. I'm pumped to play a role in such an incredible learning experience yet again!
