There has been a rise in superintendents reaching out to me since the slaying in NY took place, concerned about the safety and security of their staff. Initially, my thought was “these are really different industries and likely a false parallel.” As I sat to do a risk assessment it was clear to me that decisions are made every day at school board meetings around the country that anger people. These may be decisions regarding social issues, security issues, student care, academic content, boundary changes, school closure, etc (to name a few). Even with the rise in public incidents at school board meetings over the past few years, districts don’t typically focus much attention on these meetings except for reactive security measures. The reasoning can vary from optics, budget, resources to full on denial. You can see this when you ask “do you have a written plan for how you conduct your meetings?” I suggest organizations look at this in a different way. The goal is to keep “everyone” safe at public meetings (participants and attendees) so that the public business of the district can be conducted, people can be heard and people can observe the public process in a peaceful way. This takes planning and commitment, it doesn’t just happen.

Behavioral Threat Assessment Teams and processes are critical to the safe operation of educational environments. According to the Department of Education: Black students are 3.8 times more likely to be suspended from school than white students. Black girls are suspended at higher rates than girls of any other race or ethnicity and are almost twice as likely to be suspended as white girls. Students with disabilities are more than twice as likely to be suspended as students without disabilities. These disparities persist even when controlling for factors such as poverty and school type.
