In the wake of the recent tragic incident where a building blew up from a basement gas release in Youngstown Ohio, I was contacted by a close friend who was about to do some repairs on a 6" x 200' gas main in a chase/basement. While talking the job over, he informed me he was going to release the gas and direct it out the door, using a box fan. I begged, "Please, do not do that." He heeded my advise, plus allowed me to assist with the decompression and the purging of the residual gas. The purge was necessary because he was needing to use hot work (welding) to perform the repairs.
