California Assemblymember Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Irvine) and Senator Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera), who tragically lost his grandchild to a drunk driver during this past Christmas holiday, announced introduction of legislation (AB 366) to require anyone convicted of drunk driving to install an ignition interlock device to prevent impaired driving and save lives. Under current California law, only repeat offenders are required to install an ignition interlock device. The law is set to expire at the end of 2025. The Save Lives With Every Start legislation (AB 366) will reauthorize, extend and make this program permanent. The bill will also require that anyone convicted of a drunk driving offense the first time install a lifesaving ignition interlock device. Thirty-five states across the country have laws that require an interlock for first time offenders, and over the past five years drunk driving deaths in those states have gone down, while drunk driving deaths in California jumped by 53 percent.
