Berkeley Police Dept Announcement 11/7/24 ********** Suspect arrested in connection to Southside gunfire, that included a ballistic round penetrating a Blackwell dorm room where a student was sleeping. “On November 7th, officers arrested a 45-year-old man in connection to a series of recent gunfire incidents in the south campus.” “On October 26th at about 12:15 am, officers responded to a series of gunfire incidents in the south campus area. After speaking with witnesses and reviewing video surveillance from the area, detectives were able to identify a suspect and obtain a warrant for his arrest. Both Shot Spotter and ALPR technologies were instrumental in this investigation.” “On the morning of November 7th, members of the Department's Special Response Team performed a warrant service at a private residence in San Francisco—where the suspect (a 45-year-old San Francisco man) was arrested on suspicion of PC 245(a)(2)—assault on a person with a firearm, PC 246—willfully discharging a firearm at an occupied building or vehicle, PC 247(b)—discharging a firearm at an unoccupied building or vehicle, PC 246.3 PC—discharging a firearm in a negligent manner, and other weapon related offenses.” “During the warrant service, detectives seized several handguns, assault rifles, and ammunition. SAFEBEARS RESPONDS TO RECENT GUNFIRE NEAR UC BERKELEY, CALLS ON GOVERNOR NEWSOM TO SEND HELP October 24: A gunfight in the middle of the day two blocks from student housing. October 26: Multiple shots fired in multiple locations, with one bullet penetrating into a bedroom in a university residence hall. These are the 5th and 6th instances in 2024 of confirmed gunfire on or near the UC Berkeley campus. In the wake of the latest gunfire near UC Berkeley, SafeBears – a nonprofit organization of parents, students and community members working to make Cal safer – calls on Governor Gavin Newsom to deploy CHP officers and take other measures to protect Berkeley students and residents. Specifically, SafeBears calls for expanding the ongoing East Bay law enforcement surge to the City of Berkeley with the following actions: ????????????????? ??Deploy California Highway Patrol officers to Berkeley streets for directed patrols and saturation traffic enforcement, particularly in south and west neighborhoods; ? ????????????????? ??Expedite the operation of Flock ALPRs and other cameras on state routes in Berkeley, taking them under CHP control if necessary; ? ????????????????? ??Partner with Attorney General Rob Bonta to ensure bad actors in Berkeley are held accountable and victims receive justice.
