We were thrilled to award 52 communities in 25 states with mini grants to celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day! Held on November 14, Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day honors the living legacy of civil rights icon Ruby Bridges, who, at just six years old, integrated the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960. Her courageous act continues to inspire students, educators, and communities across the country. #RubyBridgesWalktoSchoolDay encourages students to walk to school while engaging in meaningful dialogue about #activism, #antiracism, and #antibullying. It aims to inspire kids to make positive changes in their schools and communities, just like Ruby. We were excited to see so many communities come together to celebrate Ruby’s bravery and her ongoing impact on the fight for equality. Anne Beers Elementary School and Leckie Elementary School in Washington, D.C. held celebrations led by Sweeetz LaBamba, founder of?Seasoned Settlers.?The celebrations spanned two days filled with educational assemblies and decoration creation for the quarter-mile march. Children's librarians from?DC Public Library?also shared the story of Ruby Bridges with participating students. “The celebrations meant the world to me! Being able to inspire the youth, unite the community in a safe manner and amplify awareness of who, what and how Ruby Bridges changed the world was beyond fulfilling,” said LaBamba. Kori Johnson, project manager with the Safe Routes Partnership, also participated in the event. "Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day was a joyous celebration of community, courage, and positive change. Seeing so many different partners come together to share Ruby's story with a new generation is a testament to her enduring legacy. I am grateful for the many ways Ruby Bridges continues to inspire us, and I look forward to celebrating this event for years to come." We look forward to working with even more communities in the future to promote this important event and the lessons it teaches. We’ll share more stories as the communities wrap up their grants and celebrations! Thank you to everyone who participated in honoring the living legend, #RubyBridges. ?
