Today and everyday, we honor the heroes behind the scenes. To the crisis center workers who answer the call, day and night—thank you. Your compassion, strength, and dedication save lives every single day. You are the lifeline for countless individuals in their darkest moments. Your work matters, and your impact is immeasurable. As we focus on prevention and awareness this month, let's also take a moment to recognize and appreciate the incredible work you do. To all crisis counselors and support staff: Your efforts make the world a safer place. Thank you for being the heart of hope and the voice of support. #WorldSuicidePreventionMonth #WSPD2024 #CrisisCenters #UnsungHeroes #ThankYou

We hope that eventually, all responder agencies will have the resources to employ an embedded Qualified Mental Health Professional. Until that point, Peer Support plays a crucial role while the profession lacks enough culturally competent mental health providers available to respond to real time critical events with the same understanding of the culture, the work, and the rituals. We are advocating for the Acute Stress Adaptive Protocol to be Peer-led and clinician assisted. Peer support members are often personnel who have personal experience with the impact of traumatic incidents and have an interest in helping peers who may experience similar problems. The ASAP is designed such that it can be employed by Peer Support Specialists and can be enhanced with the addition of an embedded Qualified Mental Health Professional.

Psychologist at First Responder Psychology / Author of Increasing Resilience in Police & Emergency Personnel
I am thrilled to host another Acute Stress Adaptive Protocol (ASAP) training April 22-25th. My host partners, Hillsboro Fire and Rescue (OR) and Hillsboro Police Department have offered a beautiful venue, The River House, in Rood Bridge Park, Hillsboro, Oregon. ASAP is an EMDR-based, peer support led intervention to assist peers to adaptively work through difficult professional and personal traumas. Research has shown the ASAP intervention significantly reduces PTSD as well as moral injury. ASAP is created FOR first responders BY?a former first responder. It can also be used by chaplains and first responder clinicians. ASAP is suitable for 1-on-1 and group formats. Registration is open to the first 65 registrants. The fee is $365 per person for the IN-PERSON 4-day course. Below is a 6-minute video I created relating to the intervention.
