An Article on Standard Qualified Parts that Stand the Test of Time Everyone in Pittsburgh knows the Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin’s, famous saying about consistent excellence. But what does it really mean? It means that no matter how much changes around you or how much time passes, when you have a set standard, you know what to expect every time. A product made with standard parts will be the same today, tomorrow, or even in 50 years. But what if you need to repair something built over 60 years ago? Here’s a great story from ASPQP's Member AF Fasteners that illustrates this: Donald Campbell was tragically killed in 1967 on Lake Coniston when his boat crashed and sank. Raised 34 years later, the restoration of his boat began. The boat, designed in the 1950s using aircraft hardware, needed specific bolts to ensure authenticity. In 2014, the Bluebird project team needed ‘2BA bolts like they had in the 1950s’. After some emails, it was established that part N°: AS1248-1C was required. leading supplier of high-quality aerospace hardware, had a bag on the shelf and donated them to the project. The bolts were described as ‘exactly like the originals used in the 1950s’. In 2018, the restored vessel ran at speed on Loch Fad, and after some legal battles, it was placed in the Ruskin Museum. For a small fee, visitors can now see the beautifully restored boat, a testament to the brilliance of those who worked on it. Standards are not just about maintaining quality; they are about ensuring reliability and trust. Whether it’s a historic restoration or a modern-day project, adhering to standards means you can always count on the outcome. This story of the Bluebird restoration is a perfect example of how standards ensure that even decades-old designs can be faithfully and accurately brought back to life. Congratulations to AF Fasteners, who uphold these standards, for their contribution to projects that stand the test of nt iAmret.

Our members and affiliates are sharing critical knowledge on autonomous and sustainability on day 2 of #COMVEC Be sure to check out all the showcases! CV304 Powertrain Panel This panel will discuss the steps taken by each OEMs, truck manufacturer, fleets to meet the stringent CARB-2024 and EPA/CARB-2207 Emissions/Requirements – How does the diversification in the Powertrain technology helps in lower the GHG and improve the sustainability targets. CV701 Distribution Chain/Autonomous Panel Imagine that goods are transported autonomously between major hubs. They are unloaded, sorted and loaded back automatically into smaller autonomous trucks that bring them to smaller distribution centers. Imagine that goods are transported autonomously between major hubs. They are unloaded, sorted and loaded back automatically into smaller autonomous trucks that bring them to smaller distribution centers. From there the journey is continued by smaller robot carriers that will bring each good to end-customer’s doorstep. What sounds like a sci-fi movie scene could become reality sooner than we thought. In 2023 more than 12 million tons of goods were transported by truck across the nation. The number is expected to increase by 10% in 2030 with almost 100% increase in truck-driver’s shortage. What does it take to transform this vision into reality? Where are we right now in this transformation? How far are we to fully automate our whole supply chain? What are the current challenges and what is our plan to solve them? What role does AI play to optimize supply chain during the transformation progress? https://lnkd.in/gBUZ86zT #trucking #autopilot #supplychain #hydrogen

Today I enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to see a live demonstration of a package-carrying drone and an autonomous delivery vehicle working to deliver food in Arlington, Texas. The work is performed under funding from the US Department of Energy by the City of Arlington with groceries provided by the Tarrant Area Food Bank. The equipment included an Aerialoop ATL6-4 drone and a Clevon ARC vehicle and included efforts from several organizations. Well done!

Director, UPS Global Fleet Systems; focusing on Advanced Transportation Technology and Fleet Digitization.
Looking forward to engaging in thought provoking dialogue regarding Autonomous Trucking and the associated technical needs to operate/maintain within our transportation industry.
Join our leaders and consortia members at #COMVEC this week! Catch our panel “Safeguarding Autonomous Trucking: Bridging Industry Gaps for Safety, Reliability and Maintenance” on Tuesday, Sep 10. We’re glad to be joined by Daniel Goff (Kodiak), Arun Chickmenahalli, PMP (Ryder System, Inc.), Lawrence Bader (UPS), and Zac Andreoni (Aurora) with moderator Lee White. Panel Description: There is an urgent need for standardized maintenance practices in autonomous trucking to ensure safety and cost-effective scalability. Without it, the industry risks regulatory intervention, fragmentation, and undermines public confidence. Through a panel discussion, stakeholders from fleets, truck OEMs, AV tech developers, and government agencies explore collaborative solutions. They emphasize the urgency of parallel development to seamlessly integrate maintenance and promote cohesion. By establishing industry-wide standards, stakeholders can bolster public trust and ensure the safe and reliable deployment of autonomous trucking technologies.
