?? Digital Stage - The Floor is Yours! To celebrate The Dance Floor at our brand-new Sadler’s Wells East, we’ve launched three short film commissions asking: what space is your personal dance floor? The selected projects will receive ￡6,000 to create a 4-minute or less film inspired by the theme The Floor is Yours. We’re looking for artists to explore how movement can appear in everyday life or unexpected places. Your film idea could take inspiration from memories of first dancing in your parents’ living room, to finding freedom dancing at clubs. Whether you find joy dancing with your community or peace dancing alone, we’re looking for films that celebrate what dance means to you. ??? Winners of the FIRST Rose International Dance Prize! ??? Our very first Rose International Dance Prize came to a close with an award ceremony hosted at our home, Sadler’s Wells Theatre. Greek Choreographer Christos Papadopoulos has been named as the Rose Prize winner 2025 for his haunting production, LARSEN C. Named after the vast Antarctic ice sheet which broke away in 2017, his work explores the universal patterns of change and the monumental shifts occurring around the world. And Stav Struz Boutrous has been awarded the Bloom Prize winner for Sepia, a solo piece that draws on her family’s Georgian roots, and reclaims a conventionally masculine dance, the traditional Georgian folk dance Khorumi. Stav Struz Boutrous contrasts this martial dance with feminine tenderness. The productions were judged live by a jury featuring Dame Arlene Phillips, Karthika Na?r, PJ Harvey and chaired by Professor Christopher Bannerman, who presented the winners with a trophy at the ceremony. Professor Christopher Bannerman said: "We are delighted to be awarding these two prizes to Christos Papadopoulos and Stav Struz Boutrous. Over the last ten days we've seen such a wide range of visions, all realised to an exceptionally high standard, so we extend our congratulations to all those who presented work. Each of the seven choreographers represents not only a very distinctive voice, but comes from such distinctive contexts. It made the judging process unique, but also uniquely difficult. ?? About the Rose International Dance Prize ?? A total of 7 shortlisted choreographers were nominated across 2 categories: the Rose category for established choreographers presenting a full-length performance of 50 minutes or longer, and the Bloom category, for emerging choreographers with a maximum of ten years’ experience. Staging their productions in our Sadler's Wells Theatre, the Rose category included Lia Rodrigues, Kyle Abraham, Marco da Silva Ferreira and Christos Papadopoulos, while in the Lilian Baylis Studio, the Bloom category featured Stav Struz Boutrous, Wang Yeu-Kwn / Shimmering Productions and Le?la Ka. The Rose International Dance Prize has been made possible by a generous donation to Sadler’s Wells from an anonymous individual who chose the name Rose for the prize. The donation will fund 10 iterations in total over 20 years, which positions it alongside awards like the Oscars and the Booker Prize as being both truly global and impactful to the choreographic community. Mayor of London officially opens Sadler's Wells East Last night, we threw open the doors to our brand new theatre Sadler’s Wells East with the first public performance of Vicki Igbokwe-Ozoagu Our Mighty Groove and an official visit from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. We also welcomed Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz, Mayor of Hackney Caroline Woodley and Uma Kumaran, MP for Stratford and Bow. The Mayor of London unveiled a plaque in our public foyer and met the cast and creative team behind the opening show. Our Mighty Groove is a fitting opener for our new venue, alongside professional dancers from Uchenna Dance, the cast includes young performers from the local boroughs, and is a celebration of the dance floor. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “This is a huge milestone in the East Bank journey.?Sadler’s Wells East?will be a gamechanger for dance in the capital and across the UK, bringing world-leading innovative performances to a brand-new stage and providing fantastic opportunities for young people. With many of the staff and performers living and working locally, it is already making a difference to the local economy. East Bank is creating a fantastic cultural legacy from the 2012 Olympics and I’m delighted that Sadler’s Wells East will help to inspire audiences and benefit generations to come, as we build a better London for everyone.” Our new building, designed by renowned architects O'Donnell + Tuomey is home to a fully flexible 550-seat auditorium, six state-of-the-art dance studios, a public performance space for free performances and workshops, as well as a restaurant and a bar. Sadler’s Wells East is home to two educational facilities: Academy Breakin’ Convention a hip hop theatre school for talented 16–19-year-olds, offering the UK’s first free Level 3 Diploma in Performance and Production Arts specific to hip hop, and The Rose Choreographic School. Sadler’s Wells East is the first public building to open as part of London’s newest cultural and educational district, East Bank, where it will sit alongside the BBC Music Studios, London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, UAL, UCL East (University College London) and Victoria and Albert Museum East.

Sadler's Wells East has officially opened with a dazzling production of Vicki Igbokwe-Ozoagu’s Our Mighty Groove with Uchenna Dance, featuring young dancers from east London - a joyful ode to the magical transformation that only happens on the dance floor. A Sadler's Wells production with Uchenna Dance, Our Mighty Groove will get your heart pumping and your feet tapping. The opening act sees our cast of nightclub characters find community, connection and their true selves through dance. Then it's over to you as the theatre becomes a night club and everyone dances together. Our new fourth theatre, set in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is home to everything from hip hop to ballet, rave to rhumba and kathak to krumping. The onsite restaurant Park Kitchen & Bar and The Well?keep the good times flowing from breakfast to post show drinks. For those wanting to bust a move in our light-filled foyer we have a dedicated space, The Dance Floor where we will run workshops and events and you are invited to move in your own way. The Rose International Dance Prize opens ??? "dance’s answer to the Turner prize" - The Guardian Tonight is the opening of the inaugural The Rose International Dance Prize – a brand-new biennial prize for original dance creations in any style from across the globe. The seven productions from across the globe are split into two categories - The Rose for full length works and The Bloom for choreographers with less than 10 years experience. Opening The Rose Prize is An Untitled Love by Kyle Abraham (A.I.M by Kyle Abraham), a celebration of Black love and life. In the Lilian Baylis Studio, starting the Bloom Prize, is Stav Struz Boutrous with Sepia, her feminine take on the Georgian folk dance Khorumi.? February begins with CARCA?A from Marco da Silva, moving between traditional Portuguese folk and rave dance, considering the?roles of individual identities in building a community.? Christos Papadopoulos takes inspiration from nature in LARSEN C.? In the Lilian Baylis Studio Le?la Ka brings 40 dresses and five women to the stage to fall together and discover their freedom.? Closing the programme at Sadler’s Wells is Lia Rodrigues charming Encantado conjuring up wonderous visions and in the Studio, Wang Yeu-Kwn’s Beings questions our very need to prove that we exist.?? The judges Professor Christopher Bannerman (Chair), PJ Harvey, Karthika Na?r, Dame Arlene Phillips and Dr Samuel Ross MBE) will announce the winner on Saturday 8 February after the final performance.?
