This week I will be attending the SADC Sustainable Energy Week in #Gaborone as a keynote speaker on the 1. 6th International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference & Exhibition 2024 by hosted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in a deep dive session on Off-grid renewable energy pathways for maximising socio-economic benefits and also; 2. Youth, Gender, and Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Energy hosted by SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE). Accelerating Sustainable Energy Solutions in the SADC Region From 24th–28th February, Botswana hosted the inaugural SADC Sustainable Energy Week, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and development partners to drive regional energy security and sustainability. In his keynote address, H.E. Advocate Duma Boko, President of Botswana, emphasized the role of renewable energy in Africa’s socio-economic transformation, highlighting its potential to bridge the energy gap, boost livelihoods, and unlock economic opportunities. ? Key discussions focused on: - Regional collaboration in energy projects & trade - The socio-economic benefits of renewable energy - Advancing universal energy access and a sustainable energy transition through financing, emissions tracking, and skills development -??The role of the private sector in accelerating the energy transition At the 6th International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference, Taboka Motlhabane, the Country Representative and Technical Advisor for the Project Development Programme (PDP) at GIZ Botswana and SADC participated in a panel discussion and stressed the importance of commercial and industrial actors in championing renewables and driving community development. Panelists also explored gender-responsive financing, mini-grid solutions, and the food-energy-water nexus. The Project Development Programme (PDP), a regional programme commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) under the German Energy Solutions Initiative , continues to support solar feasibility studies, market access, and SME collaboration in Botswana and the SADC region. It is always such a pleasure to bring together dynamic women in energy!???? Last week, GWNET teamed up with SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) to host a networking event in Gaborone, Botswana on the side-lines of the SADC Sustainable Energy Week Conference. The occasion aimed to connect and celebrate SADC women in energy and as well as highlight our new project, "Energising Women to Advance the Energy Transition in the SADC Region." This hands-on experience provided deep insights into cutting-edge solar thermal technologies, their applications, and the critical role they play in shaping a sustainable energy future. ???? ?? Tour Highlights: ?? SOLTRAIN Clean Energy Research Centre(CERC) Solar Thermal Facility – A demonstration site showcasing real-world applications of solar thermal energy ??. ?? BITRI Solar Thermal Testing Facility – An in-depth look at the testing and certification processes for solar collectors, ensuring efficiency and durability in the region’s climate conditions?????. ?? Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) – Appreciation of the Commercial & Industrial Facility, as it demonstrates how solar thermal energy can support local industries and sustainable practices??. Participants engaged with industry players, researchers, and engineers, gaining insights into system performance, maintenance, and future innovations. ???? The technical tour reinforced the importance of local expertise, research, and collaboration in driving the adoption of solar thermal energy across Southern Africa.
