Accelerating Sustainable Energy Solutions in the SADC Region
From 24th–28th February, Botswana hosted the inaugural SADC Sustainable Energy Week, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and development partners to drive regional energy security and sustainability.
In his keynote address, H.E. Advocate Duma Boko, President of Botswana, emphasized the role of renewable energy in Africa’s socio-economic transformation, highlighting its potential to bridge the energy gap, boost livelihoods, and unlock economic opportunities.

At the 6th International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference, Taboka Motlhabane, the Country Representative and Technical Advisor for the Project Development Programme (PDP) at GIZ Botswana and SADC participated in a panel discussion and stressed the importance of commercial and industrial actors in championing renewables and driving community development. Panelists also explored gender-responsive financing, mini-grid solutions, and the food-energy-water nexus.
The Project Development Programme (PDP), a regional programme commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) under the German Energy Solutions Initiative , continues to support solar feasibility studies, market access, and SME collaboration in Botswana and the SADC region.
