  • Celebrating Women’s History Month! This month, we honor the first women to serve as Sacramento Firefighters—Anita Lack and Denny Blehm—who paved the way for future generations. Anita joined Sacramento Fire on April 24, 1976, becoming a Fire Engineer within five years. Denny also joined in 1976, dedicating her career to firefighting and community outreach. Their courage and dedication laid the foundation for the many incredible women in our ranks today. In 2018, the Sacramento City Council honored their legacy, recognizing their lasting impact. This Women’s History Month, we celebrate their trailblazing achievements and the women of Sacramento Fire who continue to protect and serve our community. #WomensHistoryMonth #SacramentoFire #Sacramento #SacramentoFire #SFD #Firefighters #FireDepartment #SacFire #SacramentoFireDepartment #CityofSacramento #firstresponders

  • Last weekend, the Sacramento Fire and Police Departments united for the Battle of the Badges: Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge, running over 528 miles in 48 hours. Eleven dedicated participants raised more than $10,300 for Warfighter Overwatch, with Sacramento Fire earning bragging rights for the most funds raised.???? Ultimately, the true victory lies in supporting Warfighter Overwatch, benefiting all first responders in our region. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our incredible community and all those who cheered for our members and supported the cause with their generous donations. THANK YOU!

  • As we close out Black History Month, Chief Costamagna sat down with former Sacramento Fire Chief Julius “Joe” Cherry to reflect on the significance of this month and share a powerful story about the Magnificent Seven—a group of Black firefighters who served with him during his career. Chief Cherry, Sacramento’s second Black fire chief, dedicated over 30 years to the fire service. His journey didn’t stop there—he went on to become a civil attorney, professor, and CEO of Cherry Consulting Group. Hearing his memories of the Magnificent Seven was a reminder of the strength, perseverance, and impact of those who paved the way. Their legacy continues to inspire the next generation of firefighters.

  • Last night, members of the Sacramento Fire Department and Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 7 were honored at the @sacramentokings game for their dedication and bravery in responding to the Los Angeles fires last month. During the second half, our members took center court, where the crowd erupted in cheers, showing their appreciation for these incredible first responders. It was an unforgettable moment for them and their families, made possible by the amazing team at the Kings. To top off the evening, the Kings secured a victory over the Charlotte Hornets with a final score of 130-88.???? A huge thank you to the Sacramento Kings for recognizing our firefighters and giving them a night to remember! #SacramentoFire #USAR7 #FirstResponders #SacramentoKings #ThankYou #LightTheBeam #lightthebeam???? #Sacramento #SacramentoFire #SFD #Firefighters #FireDepartment #SacFire #SacramentoFireDepartment #CityofSacramento #firstresponders

  • Honoring Chief Raymond J. Charles: A Legacy That Lives On As we celebrate Black History Month, we pay tribute to a trailblazer in Sacramento’s fire service—Chief Raymond J. Charles, the first African American Fire Chief of the Sacramento Fire Department. With a 29-year career defined by dedication, resilience, and leadership, Chief Charles rose through the ranks, from fire inspector to fire marshal, deputy chief, and ultimately, fire chief in 1986. His leadership was instrumental during the 1986 flood, and his contributions to fire prevention, disaster preparedness, and emergency planning helped modernize the department. Chief Charles led with the philosophy: “I am an example of a person who does his job to the best of his ability and accepts the results.” Today, his legacy is preserved at Sacramento Fire’s Public Safety Headquarters, where his helmet is on permanent display—a symbol of his service and groundbreaking achievements. The helmet, which was unexpectedly discovered at a Delaware thrift store and auctioned online, was reclaimed by Sacramento Fire in partnership with Local 522 to bring this important piece of history home. The Hall of Honor, named in his memory in 2018, stands as another testament to his lasting impact on Sacramento’s fire service and the community. Though he passed away in 2020, Chief Raymond J. Charles’s legacy of service, perseverance, and leadership continues to inspire generations of firefighters. ?? Today, we honor his contributions and the path he paved for future leaders. #BlackHistoryMonth #SacramentoFire #Leadership #Trailblazer #FireServiceLegacy #NeverForgotten #Sacramento #SacramentoFire #SFD #Firefighters #FireDepartment #SacFire #SacramentoFireDepartment #CityofSacramento #firstresponders
