On February 16, we honor Elizabeth Peratrovich Day, celebrating the Tlingit civil rights leader whose powerful advocacy led to the passage of the 1945 Alaska Anti-Discrimination Act—the first law of its kind in the U.S. At a time when signs reading "No Natives Allowed" were common, Elizabeth fearlessly spoke out against discrimination, reminding legislators of their duty to uphold justice. Her efforts paved the way for equal rights in Alaska and inspired the broader Civil Rights Movement.
