Today, I had the opportunity to tour Sabey Data Centers in Ashburn, VA, with some of my classmates, thanks to Professor Khanh Dinh. Our tour guide was the exceptional Michael Whitlock, a true industry legend and comedian on the side. During the first hour of the tour, Michael shared his personal story, which was truly inspirational. From being raised in a single-parent household in the projects to becoming the General Manager at Sabey Data Centers, his journey was a testament to perseverance and hard work. Right before we walked through the facility, Michael asked our class why we had chosen to attend the optional tour. While many of my classmates were curious to see the inner workings of a data center, I shared their curiosity, but I had a different motivation. When it was my turn to respond, I said, "I came here to meet someone like you." Although it may have sounded like a well-timed joke, I was sincere in my appreciation for the opportunity to learn from Michael's experiences. The tour was fantastic, and we had the chance to meet some of the team members and learn about their roles. Michael's passion and enthusiasm were contagious, and we all left with a deeper appreciation for the importance of data centers. The tour was not only informative but also entertaining, with Michael's humor keeping us engaged and laughing throughout. As we concluded the tour, I felt grateful for the experience and the opportunity to gain a firsthand understanding of what it's like inside a data center. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Michael Whitlock for taking time out of his busy schedule to educate students like me and make the tour an unforgettable experience.

Is your culture fueling your AI advantage today? CFO John Wilson of Sabey Data Centers—which has 50+ years of building expertise—reveals why capital, AI, and culture sit at the heart of data center success. As AI demand surges, Wilson tells us he’s focused on building a robust debt-and-equity mix to fund these capital-intensive projects, all while preserving a “good steward” ethos that underpins Sabey’s rapid expansion. -“Eating our own dog food” with automation keeps Sabey at the tech forefront. -Power remains a key challenge, driving sustainable sourcing strategies. -Balancing rapid growth and legacy culture demands proactive leadership to embed “culture keepers” across new sites. The big takeaway? A powerful culture—kept strong through continuous stewardship—can accelerate innovation just as much as the latest technology.
