New research highlights a significant challenge in the U.S.: nearly one-third of households in multifamily units lack access to convenient EV charging. This gap is particularly pronounced in communities of color and lower-income areas, where fewer than half of the residents can charge at home compared to 84-94% in single-family homes. As urban areas struggle with uneven public charging facilities, the need for equitable EV infrastructure becomes critical. Cities like San Jose and Seattle are making strides but still show a high ratio of multifamily units to chargers. Los Angeles is creatively expanding its urban infrastructure by integrating EV chargers into streetlight poles, showcasing a significant step towards sustainable city planning. This innovative project, involving AmpUp and EVSE, introduces Level 2 chargers to 150 streetlight poles across the city. These installations, placed 10 feet off the ground, aim to slash installation costs by 70% and minimize risks associated with vandalism and accidents. This move aligns with L.A.'s goal to install 10,000 EV chargers and update streetlight bulbs to more energy-efficient LEDs.
