Rx Foundation's Jennie Riley is spot on. As funders, it's time to be ambitious. When initiative shuts down suddenly, it can leave gaps in care, fractured relationships, and unmet needs. That’s why we must shift our mindset: - Funding responsible closures = funding ethical impact - Planning for endings = preventing harm - Supporting transitions = ensuring lasting change ?? "As funders, we must ask ourselves: ?? Do we help grantees plan for sustainable transitions? ?? Are we funding the full lifecycle of an organization—including ethical exits?" Listen to Katya Fels Smyth share her story with the Rx Foundation, and let’s start the conversation about how we can do better: https://lnkd.in/e8yyF8YU
In philanthropy, we talk a lot about new initiatives, scale, and sustainability - but how often do we talk about what happens when grants, programs, or organizations end? I suspect that most of us have seen examples of how poorly planned closures leave communities struggling. When a program disappears abruptly, or when an organization leaves without closure, it disrupts care, breaks trust, and creates long-term harm. As funders, we must ask ourselves: ?? Do we help grantees plan for sustainable transitions? ?? Are we funding the full lifecycle of an organization—including ethical exits? Most nonprofits never plan for their own end. However, they should. Why? Because unexpected closures create chaos and erode trust in communities. In our latest session with Katya Fels Smyth of Full Frame Initiative, we discussed how exit strategies should be integral to long-term planning, not just a last-minute rush. ??
