?? How can we better incorporate gender perspectives and values into water decision-making? ?? On International Women’s Day, let’s recognise the importance of inclusive water governance. ?? The 2024 Valuing Water Initiative (VWI) Gender Journey explored this critical question, examining how gender and values shaped water-related outcomes and providing actionable recommendations for RVO. The document combined insights from 50 academic articles, workshops, focus groups, and interviews with water experts worldwide. Did you know that women represent about 50% of the population but less than 20% of the water sector workforce globally? ?? The research shows that: ??Different genders often value water differently and have unique perspectives ??Organisational culture significantly impacts gender inclusion ??Moving beyond tokenism to meaningful participation requires intentional effort ??Incorporating diverse values leads to more sustainable and equitable solutions Interested in creating more inclusive and effective water systems??Have a look below for more insights! ?? #InternationalWomensDay #ValuingWater #GenderEquality #RVOwater

?? Water scarcity affects entire communities, but women often bear the heaviest burden. In Mugogodo West, Kenya, the Women's Group representative Hannah Kalkulei has shared valuable insights on how water management directly impacts women's lives and livelihoods. ?? Through RVO's Reversing the Flow (RtF) programme, women like Hannah are taking leadership roles in addressing water challenges. When women participate in water security decisions, the benefits extend to food security, economic opportunity and community resilience. The programme supports vulnerable communities across sub-Saharan Africa by strengthening locally-led water management, landscape restoration and climate adaptation actions. ?? RtF's community-led approach is making a difference. Local NGOs, called ‘hubs’, support communities in organising and leading these initiatives, ensuring solutions are sustainable and tailored to local needs. ?? Water infrastructure is one of the biggest challenges of our time. But what if the best solutions come from working together? ?? ? The Dutch Sustainable Water Fund (FDW) has shown that groundbreaking three-party partnerships—bringing together governments, businesses, and NGOs—can drive real impact. According to former professor John Cameron of the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), these partnerships combine funding, innovation, and local knowledge, creating long-term solutions for water security. ?? John: "Activities with longer timeframes can bring real change and address long-term uncertainties such as climate change. Therefore, 3-way PPPs can help us to achieve the UN 2030 sustainability agenda." ? In 2024 alone, FDW projects have improved access to clean water for over 30,000 people by combining public funding with private expertise and community engagement.? ?
