Coffee is the most consumed beverage in America (and third-most in the world), yet it is poorly understood. UC Davis researchers across the sciences and humanities disciplines are demystifying the drink — and coming up with ways to make it more delicious and sustainable — in the only university coffee lab in the country. The UC Davis Coffee Center, conceived (where else?) over a cup of coffee and opened in May, is working with the $28 billion American coffee industry to tackle challenges such as sustainable farming, grading bean color and measuring consumer taste preferences. Read more about the Coffee Center by visiting https://ucdav.is/48Y5GCA. #OurUCDavis | #CoffeeLab | #CoffeeScience Image descriptions: 1: The Coffee Center can be seen on a sunny day with the Coffee Center sign in the foreground. 2: Timothy Styczynski works with a student on making a latte during a class. 3: Students sit in the Sensory Room with dividers between them. Rutherford + Chekene is proud to be the structural engineer on this beautiful project at City College of San Francisco!

Enjoying a sneak peek at the almost complete City College of San Francisco STEAM Building.?The building celebrates the architectural nook and cranny - inside and out. Inside provides for varied moments for spontaneous interaction for the mixing of art and science.?Outside creates a textured fa?ade that evolves over the course of the day as shadows move across its surface.?? A great collaboration with Rudolph and Sletten, City College of San Francisco, Creo Landscape Architecture, and SmithGroup. #SmithGroup, #DesignaBetterFuture

We had an incredible time at this year’s Leap Sandcastle Classic on October 26! Joining forces with teams across the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) community, we turned sand into stunning sculptures to raise funds for Leap - Arts In Education. This unforgettable day was all about coming together for creativity, teamwork, and—most importantly—giving kids access to arts education in Bay Area schools. Thank you to everyone who supported our team and helped make this day possible! Let’s keep making an impact together! #LeapSandcastleClassic #AECcommunity #ArtMatters #SupportTheArts

This month marks the 40th anniversary of the?Monterey Bay Aquarium?!?R+C is?incredibly proud to?be?a trusted?partner to the aquarium since the construction of its original facility on Cannery Row in 1984. The mission and vision for the aquarium was revolutionary for its focus on conservation and education and for showcasing local sea habitats and ecosystems. Translating this vision to a physical structure was a monumental task, sparking innovation for all involved. Seawater, brought in fresh from the bay, serves as the lifeblood of the aquarium. R+C’s co-founder, John Rutherford, was highly involved in the design of the project’s sophisticated seawater filtration system—going as far as to obtain a scuba diving license in his 60s to personally assess the best locations for anchoring the seawater intake system under the aquarium. Overall, the original facility included two 350,000-gallon, reinforced concrete tanks installed on decks built largely over piers; six large, high-rate sand filters; and several thousand feet of corrosion-resistant pipes. The second phase of construction added the Outer Bay Waters wing, which includes a one-million-gallon seawater tank that features one of the largest acrylic windows in the world. Congratulations to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on an incredible 40 years!?
