The center of undergraduate education at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

关于我们

The School of Arts and Sciences is the liberal arts school of Rutgers University–New Brunswick, offering more than 100 majors and minors across life sciences, mathematical and physical sciences, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences. The School of Arts and Sciences, the largest and most comprehensive academic unit at Rutgers, is committed to preparing students for life in a rapidly changing world. With roots that date back to the beginning of higher education in America, the School reflects a tradition of liberal arts learning that began in 1766 with the founding of Queen’s College, the institution that would become Rutgers University. Four outstanding undergraduate institutions carried that tradition into the 21st century: Rutgers, Douglass, Livingston, and University colleges. Established in 2007 with the union of the four colleges, the School of Arts and Sciences brings together the talent, traditions, energy, and resources of all four and enlists them all in the mission to create the best school for arts and sciences in the nation. Now, the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences is a globally engaged teaching and research institution, with 750 full-time faculty and a vibrant and diverse student body of over 20,000 students. The Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences offers an education of unparalleled breadth and depth biological, mathematical, and physical sciences, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences, combining excellence in teaching with boundary-breaking research. With over 200,000 living alumni who attended the School of Arts and Sciences or the legacy colleges, the liberal arts tradition at Rutgers University--a tradition that goes back to the beginning of classical higher education in America, and one that is thoroughly engaged in our complex world today--is well represented in all 50 states and across the globe.

On this day: Professor Selman Waksman (RC1915, ‘16) made history with his Nobel Prize-winning discovery of streptomycin—the first antibiotic to fight tuberculosis. ?? In 1900, TB was the deadliest disease in the U.S., claiming 147,000 lives yearly. Thanks to Waksman’s breakthrough, TB deaths dropped by over 90% by the 1960s.

    Chancellor at Rutgers University–New Brunswick

Undergraduate students who want to engage in real scientific research will find plenty of opportunities at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. Just ask Dr. Jennifer Sun who took full advantage of our Aresty Research Center for Undergraduates at Rutgers University when she was an undergrad. Dr. Sun says the Aresty program changed the course of her studies, career, and life. She wrote her first (successful!) grant proposal as a freshman. Throughout her undergraduate career at #RutgersNB she participated in research that spanned so many branches of science—from learning about insects and their parasites, to what she calls “hardcore chemistry,” to studies on dementia. And she developed long-lasting relationships with faculty mentors including Distinguished Professor G. Charles Dismukes. "All those experiences helped me to have the tenacity to be a scientist and realize that science was what I wanted to do," Dr. Sun said recently. After graduating #RutgersNB in 2013 with a BA in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, she went on to Yale where she earned her MS and Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology—and now she is back at Rutgers as a Presidential Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Perhaps best of all, Dr. Sun is giving back by mentoring students in her lab through Aresty and other undergraduate research programs we offer, like the Research in Microbiology Program. These photos show her with two of those students: Tia Hart, a junior majoring in Biology who plans to earn her Ph.D. in either cancer or infectious disease research, and Nicholas Johnson, a Microbiology major who plans to work in the industrial microbiology field after he graduates in January. #RutgersNB prides itself in offering outstanding hands-on learning opportunities for our students, no matter their interests. Aresty and the Research in Microbiology Program are wonderful examples, and Dr. Sun and her students show how important they are in fostering student success.
