This image captures an important step in tree installation: properly preparing the planting hole. ? Why does this matter? The size, depth, and soil conditions of a tree’s planting site directly impact its long-term health and stability. Here’s what we focus on at Russell Landscape when installing trees for commercial projects: ?? Dig the Right Hole – A common mistake is planting too deep. The hole should be 2-3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper than its height, ensuring roots have space to spread while keeping the root flare at ground level. ?? Soil Matters – Compact clay soils (like the one shown here) can restrict root growth. We break up compacted areas and, when necessary, amend the soil for better drainage and aeration. ?? Watering & Mulching – Once planted, proper watering schedules and a 2-3 inch layer of mulch (kept away from the trunk) help retain moisture and protect roots. Day 4 of Property Management 101 at Northpark explored Building Operations. Members call it the BOMA Family, but sometimes it is literal. Instructors Mark Gallman, SMA,SMT, LEED Green Associate (RETIRED) and Brock Gallman, supported by sponsors John Wetherald and Ross Wetherald with Russell Landscape Group. After working with one of our hardscape managers a few times, we were able to apply some of the experience and knowledge he passed on to us. This is one of our recent pedestal controllers we installed with a 6" concrete pad we poured with Quickset concrete. We made a form for our conduit that's needed for the power and our wires for our valves in the field. We took our time, measured and leveled twice and gave it out best shot.
