The first snow flurries of the season yesterday. ?? ???

On Nov. 1, a new version of OHIO's Environmental Health and Radioactive Isotope Tracking System was released as the result of a 2022-23 senior capstone project. This new version came to be through the Student Software Engineering Program (SSEP) and the hard work of 2023 computer science graduates. ??? The 2024-25 SSEP capstone project is the development of a new mobile-friendly web application for the Bobcat Brew Trail.

Thanks to Dean Patrick Fox of the Ohio University Russ College of Engineering and Technology for inviting me and Cary Roberts Frith to meet with faculty and staff the college. I learned at the meeting that the college has already exceeded last year's research funding totals and they are only halfway through the fiscal year. Great to see how the faculty, staff, and students are supporting the Discovery mission of the university!

DriveOhio, the Department of Transportation and Ohio University have been working together to find out the probability of having self-driving cars in rural settings. Led by Dr. Jay Wilhem, the project was a four-year study that began in 2020 and ended in June 2024 and collected data on self-driving cars' performance in less populated areas with different infrastructure than urban environments.

Our very own Dean Patrick Fox has received the 2024 Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for his paper "Analytical Solutions for Internal Stability of a Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall at the Limit State." ?? ASCE gives the award to the leading geotechnical engineering paper each year. Dean Fox previously won the Middlebrooks Award in 2008 and 2009.

Happy #VeteransDay, Bobcats ???? Ohio University recently hosted the VAU Fallen Heroes Memorial on campus in late October. The Memorial is composed of more than 7,000 dog tags, each representing a service member who has fallen in the War on Terror. The dog tags are arranged in alphabetical order from Sept. 11, 2001, to December 31, 2017, with tags thereafter in chronological order of those Killed in Action (KIA).

On Nov. 6, the Lancaster Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Fairfield County Workforce Center Engineering Technology Lab! ?? ?? The Center will provide a revitalized space for students to learn and experience hands-on engineering activities, preparing them for advanced manufacturing careers . Programs will be administered by instructors from Ohio University Lancaster and Hocking College. The $2 million buildout was funded by the Fairfield County Commissioners and the State of Ohio, along with an additional $1.5 million for new equipment.

The Russ College held the first inaugural Raymon B. Fogg Distinguished Lecture on Oct. 25, celebrating Fogg's life and legacy. Ohio Department of Transportation and Kokosing representatives spoke on the I-70/I-71/SR-315 interchange project in downtown Columbus and discussed the challenges of maintaining traffic flow during the project.
