This past weekend, we were proud to team up with a longtime partner of ours,?Running Start, a nonpartisan nonprofit that trains young women to run for political office, and Xceleader on their?HBCU Women's Leadership Summit?in DC - bringing together 80 trailblazing Gen Z women from HBCUs nationwide to strengthen their leadership skills and elevate their voices in politics, advocacy, and community development. When we planned on being a part of this event a while back, knowing it would take place a week after the election, we knew it was going to be timely no matter what--what we didn't know is that it would come to take on even greater weight in the wake?of an election where already fewer women ran for office than in 2020, and VP Harris's loss could have a chilling effect on women, and women of color, wanting to run in the future. Her Campus was proud to be the media partner at this event, amplifying the event and its content across our platforms to spread its mission that much further, with HC's beyond-inspiring 22 Under 22 winner and community member Ssanyu Lukoma on-site attending and covering the event.? At Her Campus Media we will be continuing our work with Running Start in 2025 as we look to lean into ongoing ways to drive impact and ensure the next generation of women is ready to continue making their voices heard and ascending to positions of decision-making, power, and influence. Thank you to Susannah Wellford, Jessica Kelly, & Serena Saunders for your partnership!

Nonpartisan nonprofit providing young women with the confidence, capabilities, and connections to lead in politics.
关于我们
Running Start was created because young women remain only a tiny fraction of the elected officials and candidates for public office in the United States. To truly build the percentage of women leading in politics, we must get more women to run at a young age. Running Start introduces young women to role models, talks to young women about the importance of politics in their lives, and gives them the encouragement and skills to pursue a career in political leadership. What We Do Train young women to run for political office. Why We Do It Less than 1 in 4 elected leaders in the United States are women. Even fewer are young women. For instance, just 7 women in Congress today are under 40 years old. When women run, they win at the same rates as men, but there aren’t enough women running for office. Research shows that women don’t run for a host of reasons, but a key reason is lack of confidence. Running Start gives young women the skills they need so that they can feel confident on their path to politics. How We Do It Running Start has six training programs for high school, college-aged, and recently graduated young women. They are: the Young Women’s Political Leadership Program; the Summit; Elect Her; the Running Start / Walmart Star Fellowship; the Running Start Internship Program; and Run with Running Start. Each program combines skills training from experts (in fundraising, public speaking, messaging, networking, and campaign team building) and mentoring by women in politics. We find that our program participants leave with the confidence to run now (for student government and local office) and the desire and skills to run in the future!

Regardless of who you were rooting for this election, the reality is that women at all levels of politics in the US remain underrepresented. We know our work is cut out for us. As we have done for the past 17 years, Running Start will continue building a pipeline for young changemakers across the country, and supporting them along the way. They need your encouragement, hope, and support. Join us at runningstart.org. While it looks like the number of women in Congress will decrease next year, there will be a new record number of women Governors, a record number of Black women Senators, and the country's first openly trans Congresswoman, our friend Sarah McBride.

How lucky am I to have Charlotte Clymer as a Board Member of Running Start? (And more importantly as a friend.) The best thing you can wish for with a nonprofit is to have supporters who truly get your mission and who will use their personal connections to help it succeed. Charlotte is all that. Today is her birthday, and as she has done for so many years, she is throwing Running Start a fundraiser, this time to cover travel costs for our HBCU women. Thank you friend! I am so grateful to you!

Finally! A conference that includes young people in the conversation! Thank you Athens Democracy Forum for bringing so many young voices to Athens. None yet from Running Start but I hope in the future! Especially enjoying two bright stars from DC: Nikki Keating and Lauren Perl
